Upload speed 25% of sync / IP profile speed for several weeks now

I have been using Plusnet Broadband since 2005 with a Netgear DGN2200v3 ADSL router and used to get near 1MBps upload speeds and 4-5MBPs download, which has been fine for my needs. however recently I noticed my works laptop wouldn't connect properly as upload speed was too slow, and certain software timed out. Using BTW speed checker it showed speeds of between 4.0-4.5 MBps download and 0.16-0.22 MBps upload speeds. The router stats showed upstream line speeds of 985kbps though, full stats below:

                Downstream                                      upstream

line speed       5440kbps                                      985kbps

Attenuation          42db                                            26db

Noise margin          8.7                                             6.0db

Current line speed states 4.8 MB (no upload figure)

Line is quiet. Tests carried out from Test socket, with wireless off (makes no difference if other devices connected or not it seems) tried test using different devices with results in same range, but have no spare router to try.

Plusnet CS have made some amendments to line twice now (remove cap?), but still get same results,

Anyone got any thoughts on what might be the problem here? I am currently forced to use a mobile hotspot to link to work, and that has faster stats than the ADSL most of the time, but uses a lot of data allowance!

Re: Upload speed 25% of sync / IP profile speed for several weeks now

How is your line performing?

Please post your router stats; for PN TG582n and 2704n routers use the buttons below, for other routers look at the Kitz link.

Also run a BT Wholesale speed test (ideally using an Ethernet wired PC with the WiFi turned off) then run the further diagnostics and post the results here. DO NOT REBOOT the router!

Also find your CURRENT SPEED (PlusNet line profile) from the PlusNet user portal - you will need to log in.

Re: Upload speed 25% of sync / IP profile speed for several weeks now

Hi Townsman

Here are my router stats:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Link Rate 5705 Kbps 979 Kbps
Line Attenuation 41.5 dB 26.1 dB
Noise Margin 7.8 dB 6.1 dB

And BTW further diagnostics results...

1. Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.

  Download  Speed
  4.65 Mbps

0 Mbps 7.15 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 4.65 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 5.03 Mbps

2. Upstream Test:  -provides background information.

  Upload Speed
  0.15 Mbps

0 Mbps 0.83 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.15Mbps
 Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps

and Current Line speed is 4.8MBps

Thanks

@Gandalf

Any thoughts on why the US data speed tests are so slow?  Synch looks good.  Is there evidence of heavy traffic on the line - for example upload synching?

I'm guessing that @Townman might be looking for the full router stats (including errors and other information.)

Is that available from your router?

You've mentioned the checks you have done already - if you are using a microfilter have you tried a new one?

Re: Upload speed 25% of sync / IP profile speed for several weeks now

Hi JayG,

these are the only stats my old router provides unfortunately. I also tried connecting the router via different microfilter, but not a new one. no obvious change to stats or speeds

I turned on all the logging though and it seems a regular amount of scans it depicts as Denial of Service, but not sure how that might affect upload speed:

- at this frequency all day.

I am not sure what else i can try

Re: Upload speed 25% of sync / IP profile speed for several weeks now

Fix

Hi there.

Whilst I'm not sure why your upstream throughput is so low, it looks like the sync rate is restricted by interleaving. I'd like to turn interleaving off to see if that improves things for you.

However, I believe we've placed an order to uncap the upstream sync (when it actually looks already uncapped). So once that completes on Monday I'll get interleaving removed and we'll go from there.

Re: Upload speed 25% of sync / IP profile speed for several weeks now

If they correspond to times when your Internet connection is being used, I think a lot of those "DoS attack" log entries will be false positives, your router incorrectly blocking legitimate traffic, probably on the basis that there's too much of it. Although it probably will not affect your specific issue of low upstream throughput speeds, it might generally be better if your router weren't blocking legitimate traffic.

Re: Upload speed 25% of sync / IP profile speed for several weeks now

@Gandalf

Removing interleaving increased upload speed to around 0.35 Mbps, which solved my immediate problem, although still low. Then a DLM change reset the sync to 1111 kbps and now the upload speed is around 0.95 Mbps, so all is well with my broadband now, thanks.
