Unusual Series of Retrains on ADSL

Hi,
Is it possible to ask somebody to generate a Visual RADIUS print for my line? My ADSL has been pretty stable lately (last train I looked at had been connected around 75 days or so), but today I looked at my router stats and it says 38 retrains - which means 37 in the last week or so?
This seems a little excessive given the previous period!  Huh
I notice that at least some of the time it has trained around 1Mbps higher downstream than the previously stable speed, doesn't the Exchange equipment keep any kind of history about what a line can achieve?
For the record the stable speed was 6895 kbps downstream / 1075 kbps upstream. Currently it seems to have really got itself into some problems at 6327 kbps down / 415 kbps up.
Nothing has changed as far as I can see, certainly nothing in the house and nobody suspiciously tinkering with the cabinet that I've seen (chance would be a fine thing, no sign of a FTTC upgrade here  Cry ).
Just really wanted to sanity check and make sure I'm not imagining things! Thanks.
Update: Generated some graphs from my router stats. The retrains went through the roof today, and the SNR is all over the place.

Re: Unusual Series of Retrains on ADSL

The long period of stability could have caused the Exchange equipment to lower your target SNR margin.  As a result you have a connection that is faster but less stable.  If the Exchange equipment decides it is now too unstable it will most likely put you back to where you were before.  And in due course the whole cycle might repeat.

Agreed, that seems likely. My fear is that I'll end up on some horrendously slow (but finally stable again) connection.  Undecided
I've already lost more than half of my upstream speed!

Well the other possibility is that your line has developed a High Resistance Fault.  I say that because on a line I worked with that had such a fault, loss of upload speed was a major symptom.  If so, you will find that your "retrains" tend to happen when you get an incoming telephone call.

Re: Unusual Series of Retrains on ADSL

It looks like you had a bad day yesterday for disconnections;

How are your speeds at the minute?

Re: Unusual Series of Retrains on ADSL

Well the flood of disconnections has stopped for the time being but the last retrain was a low one. It settled on 6287 kbps downstream and 547 kbps upstream and that seemed to stop the problems, but now I'm stuck with 16dB upstream SNR margin.  Shocked
Tuesday night and Wednesday morning were very wet here, several extremely heavy downpours in quick succession so it looks like something got flooded between me and the exchange.
I'll give it a few days to make sure it is stable and then try resetting it.
Thanks for confirming I wasn't imaging it!

No worries, a couple more days of stability and your line will be fine to reset.

Re: Unusual Series of Retrains on ADSL

Unfortunately that didn't really work out  Cry
Upstream SNR margin plummeted from 16 dB to less than 2dB in an hour and triggered another 5 retrains in quick succession.
No rain today either which doesn't match my previous theory .

Re: Unusual Series of Retrains on ADSL

It's at a very similar time to the other day;

Did anything in your house come on at that time?

Nothing at all that I know of, there's nobody there. Heating doesn't come on in the day (and doesn't cause this in the evening), I'm stumped as to what it could be in the house.
I'll see if it does it tomorrow when I'm there in case anything presents itself outside.

Let us know how it goes, if it is similar times again then it would point towards something interfering.
