I am going to receive a few whiteboxes 3 to be precise. One for the proper use and 2 as for unlocking purposes.
I have found a few guides but extremely complicated!!
1st of all whats a telnet?
And how can a mac terminal understand pinging to the router/whitebox?
Any help appreciated?

Telnet is a command you can run from terminal, just by typing it in - then a space - then the IP address of the device you want to talk to.
Unlocking should be as straightforward as flashing with the original TP Link firmware but will depend on the model you actually get.
Don't forget the boxes aren't your property, they have been paid for by the European Commission i.e. our taxes! If you take 3 boxes, 2 people somewhere else can't take part in the project.
You do get to keep them after the project has finished though.

Also, all 3 need to be connected or they will want them back as they won't be sending data.

@JamieDanjoux
What are you planning to do with the unlocked routers ?
Are you going to create different subnets on your home network for increased security ?
or are you going to use them as additional wireless access points ?
or flash them with some tiny Linux distro to use as small servers of some sort ?
Which model of whiteboxes did you ask for ?
