Unable to change password on my router

I just successfully change the password to my plusnet account. I was then told to change the password on my router(Thompson 585).
I followed the directions given to a particular site and was asked for my username and password. I entered admin as the username and the SN number of the router of the router, but was still rejected. I
I have tried phoning for help, but never get an answer.
Would appreciate any advice.

Re: Unable to change password on my router

Hi AlexSimms100
Welcome to the forum Smiley
On the back of the router you will see a recessed Reset button
Using a paper-clip or similar item
Press & hold that button until all lights go off the release the button
This will take the router back to factory settings for you to be able to try with the UserName / Password that came with the router

Edit:
For Clarity
Who told you to change the Password on the router
What particular site was you following directions from
Who asked you for your UserName / Password

Re: Unable to change password on my router

Before going as far as a factory reset have you tried entering "Administrator" as the username?

Re: Unable to change password on my router

Thanks for the welcome
I tried using "Administrator" to no avail.
The directions to enter username/pass word came from the plusnet help site at http://www.plus.net/support/security/usernames_and_passwords/speedtouch_5x6.shtml.
I have also tried resetting as well. It didn't work.
I can still connect, but it takes some fiddling.
I am wondering whether I need a new router.

Re: Unable to change password on my router

can  you try and Telnet into the router with the default credentials
http://npr.me.uk/telnet.html
I want to rule out the unable to access just the GUI side

Re: Unable to change password on my router

To recap
After Factory resetting the 585 the
GUI does not accept the default UserName & Password
Telnet also does not accept the default UserName & Password
Hmm strange
Clutching at straws for a minute & scratching chin
Can you try a Factory reset 1 more time, this time holding the recessed button for 30 - 40 seconds
Then retry with the default credentials
I was thinking that the original try may of been inadvertently a standard reset as opposed to the full Factory reset

Re: Unable to change password on my router

There are 3 different default username and password combinations listed here: http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/hardware/thomson-585-faqs-and-troubleshooting.shtml#userPass

Re: Unable to change password on my router

It turned that there was a fault in the router and Plusnet have sent me a new one and all is now well.
Many thanks for all your contributions here.
