Type of connection

A guy from Mcafee asked me the question:

What is the internet connection you have? (Dial-up, DSL, Cable, Cable-Wireless, DSL-wireless, Fiber-Optic, Satellite or T1/LAN) ?

Normally I just say wireless because I think that is all they need to know, But this one guy then said  Cable-wireless or DSL-wireless. ?

As far as I'm concerned it is just wireless. The wire comes in the house to the router then I connect wirelessly.

So I can decide, can anyone enlighten me pls?

@candnwillis - The answer to that depends on your type of Broadband connection you're on, if it's ADSL or fibre then it would be the latter of the two, but if you were on Virgin Cable then it's the former.

So you're using wi-fi for your device(s) to connect to the router.

The McAfee guy is referring to your internet connection. If there's a wire coming into the house it isn't wireless.

My cabling is and was nothing to do with Virgin. It's the old BT cable from post to outside wall, same as the house has had for many years. We just signed up for broadband and plugged in the router.

It is wireless from my laptop to the router though. what does that make it then pls ?

Our telephone line is one originally suited to telephone, not the internet so would that make us cable?

It'll be DSL then.

'Cable' in this context means a service like Virgin's, where a coaxial cable runs from the operator's street cabinet to the home.

At the risk of confusing you further BT Openreach supply two offerings FTTP where fiberopic cable is run to your house (property) and FTTC where fiberopic cable is run to the local cabinet and then the connection is made through the traditional telephone cable you have. Virgin do cable which looks like a coaxial cable and is run separately to your house. iIRC Virgin will also supply FTTC as well where they don't supply cable.

Er, what about ADSL ?

iIRC Virgin will also supply FTTC as well where they don't supply cable.

Virgin have never supplied FTTC AFIAA, they used to provide ADSL to customers outside their footprint but they sold that business to TalkTalk a few years ago

Virgin are actually rolling out FTTP in some areas then convert it back to Docsis or whatever in the house.

In the context of the options in McAfee's list, I would interpret DSL as being ADSL or VDSL (FTTC), and Fibre Optic as being FTTP/FTTH.
