Good point.
I've just tried adding two uk.pool.ntp.org IP address to the router ntp settings.
This should bypass any need for dns.
I'm assuming "not used" signifies the other time server was faster so that one was used.

I would think so, my NTP server has the "Active Peer", and the others are "Candidate"s.

I'm Using my forwarder first then 208.67.222.123 just incase the forwarder falls over hence the Metric of 1
DNS Server Entries:
DNS Server Source Label Metric Intf State Domain
S 192.168.0.15 0 Internet UP *
S 208.67.222.123 1 Internet UP *
The only thing on my network that uses a dhcp supplied address with plusnet servers is my sambox, everything else has a static ip address, most of the traffic is forced through my cache/forwarder with some traffic allowed to do a nornal dns lookup of it's own through port 53.
I hope this makes sense, i'm just not great at explaining stuff. So what i need to do is more like as purleigh suggested earlier using my internal sntp server to keep the router updated. Or some other-way i'm not aware of how to do it.
@npr if i added my cache to instead of 127.0.0.1 how does that affect my sambox fed from dhcp ?
I think the idea is to make ntp get it's time through >192.168.0.15 < or from it. I just don't no which way to attack it from a security point of view

That will mean the router, for it's own internal lookups, will use your RPi cache and not the name servers in "dns server route list"
Any devices (sambox etc) using the router for dns will still be using the name servers specified in "dns server route list"
Not sure I follow what you're trying to achieve but I thing the method in post #15 may be the better option -- no dns involved.
I'd feel better if you could identify what had gone wrong in the first place.

My problem is using the following my router doesn't update it's time.
DNS Server Entries:
DNS Server Source Label Metric Intf State Domain
S 192.168.0.15 RPi 0 Internet UP *
S 208.67.222.123 1 Internet UP *
Don't forget i'm using the firewall rule blocking port 53!
Using the following is fine
DNS Server Entries:
DNS Server Source Label Metric Intf State Domain
S 208.67.220.123 0 Internet UP *
S 208.67.222.123 1 Internet UP *
I have now reverted to the first configuration. I did warn you i'm not the best at explaining stuff... feel free to ask as many questions as you like the get to the bottom of what i'm trying to explain.

Quote Any devices (sambox etc) using the router for dns will still be using the name servers specified in "dns server route list"
The Sambox doesn't use the router forwarder, it uses port 53 >212.159.6.9,212.159.6.10 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4
I've dropped the configuration below, the sambox is allowed to use port 53.

Yes that works, sorry i got caught up in the madness and missed it.
IP Address Version Status Name
212.159.6.9 3 not used ntp.plus.net
212.159.6.9 3 synchronized
What is the downside to this though ?

None that I can see.
As purleigh suggest, I would enter a few uk.pool.ntp.org IP addresses and probably delete the url for the plusnet time server just have it's ip.
Glad you've got a workaround even if we've fail to ID the cause.

I was just trying to use my cache which has a local ip, as soon as i put 2 proper dns servers in the "dns server route list" ntp sprang into life again.
DNS Server Entries:
DNS Server Source Label Metric Intf State Domain
S 192.168.0.15 RPi 0 Internet UP *
S 208.67.222.123 1 Internet UP *
@TORPC I've slightly updated your list, i hope you don't mind.
[tt]Command Comments
sntp list List the time servers
sntp add name=ntp.plus.net version=3 Add a time server by Name
sntp add addr=212.159.6.9 version=3 Add a time server by address(no dns required)
This can be done in the routers GUI
sntp delete name=ntp.plus.net Delete a time server by name
sntp delete addr=212.159.6.9 Delete a time server by address(no dns required)
This can be done in the routers GUI
sntp config poll=360
saveall Set poll interval to 6 hours.
Default is 60 minutes.
system settime View system time settings[/tt]
Thanks Everybody for your help, much appreciated.
