Throughput in the real world

Sync 16115 Plusnet IP 14M - _actual_ performance ?? 2.7Mbps

So what was the point of ADSL2+ again, exactly ?

Re: Throughput in the real world

No problem here...

ETA: I'm not actually a MAAF user, I've just picked up one of their IP addresses.

@disfoot
If that test was run over a wireless connection you need to try wired.
Do you get that speed all day or just at peak times?

Re: Throughput in the real world

My real speed now seems to be hovering between 9M and 10M download - it's now 11:50pm.
So, not much point in having an ADSL2+ connection when the network is the bottleneck, is there ? And when the network isn't the bottleneck, then misconfigured 'Profiles' often are.
@jelv
if using wireless was also a major factor in reducing effective IP throughput, then the entire surfing population has a serious problem, as it is doubtless the preferred method of connection in preference to a CAT5 cable these days.
The problem with offering such advice to account for a drop in IP throughput from 14M to 2.7M is that it can be misinterpreted as Pro-ISP FUD. In reality, modern G and N wireless links are surely highly unlikely to account for such a drop ?Huh

Re: Throughput in the real world

That looks like exchange contention.
Wireless can give that sort of drop for various reasons including conflict with a nearby network on the same channel.

Re: Throughput in the real world

Are you aware that WiFi has different data rates depending on signal quality? This mean weaker the signal a different data rate is used. I can see this on my router as if report the actual speed unlike the PC which report the maximum speed of the protocol. So I see devices connected from 54mbps down to 1mbps for an Internet radio which is positioned the furthest away from the router.

Re: Throughput in the real world

Hi disfroot,
If you seem to be getting slower speeds at different times of the day then I would suggest raising a fault so this can be investigated further. If it turns out to be VP related it has been know for people to be moved onto different VPs.
