When you said in your first post, "the laptop connection shows green", what exactly did you mean? It wasn't clear to me (and maybe to others).
Just a thought - it's very unlikely, but could you have a faulty ethernet cable? Do you have another cable you can try?

Yes i have tried a couple of cables, the green light is showing on the router and the other light is where i plug the ethernet cable into my laptop

I think this means your router thinks you have a connection and your ethernet port thinks you have a connection.  Have you uninstalled ZoneAlarm yet?

hav'nt unistalled z/alarm, but disabled it  still no differance

If you open a command prompt window(*), type ipconfig /all at the prompt and press enter does the Section of the listing headed Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection show DHCP Enabled: yes, give an IPv4 address like 192.168.1.64, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and list two DNS Servers?
* To open a command prompt window click Start, type command in the Start Search box and click Command Prompt at the top of the menu
