Thomson Gateway fails to allocate IP address.

Hi, I have the bog standard free thomson gateway and I am trying to connect a network drive to it. However despite the gateway 'seeing' the divice, the device isn't being allocated an IP.
Can anyone help to unravel this conundrum?

Is the network drive configured to requested an address by DHCP?
What model is the drive?

After posting here I eventually lost my pateince  and the external caddy will now be appearring on ebay!
