Is he using the correct test? as it is so different

Pierre, I think the OP must be using the wrong tester.  I gave him the correct URL last night but can't recall him using it.

Re: The BT speedtester is still broken

I am not sure but I think PJMarsh and HPsauce were implying that the other output was for those on fixed 2mg old non max lines, hence my sarky Intelligent about BT

so the BT speedtest is "£$INTELLIGENT$£" enough to know the difference  - ta problem solved

No, it seems that it's nothing to do with it being on fixed rate or BB-max.  I'm on BB-max and sometimes get that alternative result.
What happens is that occasionally I get an error message suggesting that I try again and, if I do this immediately, I get diverted to a different tester which doesn't ask for my ISP user name (as is normally the case) and displays that second form of report.
BTW I'm using Vista and find that Firefox always causes the test to stop at 96%.  It could be that those finding that Firefox works ok aren't on Vista while the others are.  Alternatively is it possible that those who find it works are using the Java downloaded from Sun whilst the others are using the MS version?

I'm using Firefox 3 and XP with Java that has recently been updated from the Sun site.  Originally Java was downloaded as part of Firefox installation.  BT really should sort the tester out once and for all.

Re: The BT speedtester is still broken

I'm using Firefox on Linux.
So I'm confident that I didn't get my Java from Microsoft.
Is it possible that BT are using "Microsoft Java" ie a version that only works in M$ Windows?
Unfortunately, Sun took Microsoft to court to stop them issuing crippled Java.
Hence M$ couldn't give you something that worked with BT if you installed Vista in the last year or two.
Just a theory.  Smiley
I bet the speedtester "works" on XP Windows (quite often anyway).

Re: The BT speedtester is still broken

Just done a BTspeedtest and it worked perfectly unlike last night when it hung at 98%.  Nothing has changed on my PC..
As mentioned earlier that's with Firefox 3 and XP.  From memory Java was loaded as part of the Firefox installation.

Re: The BT speedtester is still broken

just done this test on my  Asus Eeepc 4g with supplied Linux, Firefox 2 and Java
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5961 kbps
So it does work.
PS have you seen the Forum blog about the Firefox and recent scam.  Scary

BT Speedtester has never worked for me in any version of Firefox, I think it has something to do with the Java app. Works fine when I use it in IE 6 or IE7 though.

I have two lap tops XP using Firefox, they both work
I have an Asus Eeepc 4g with Linux and Firefox that works, so dont say it wont work with Firefox it does

I didn't say it doesn't work in Firefox. I said it has never worked for ME in Firefox despite down loading the latest version of Java from Sun.

Well you were lucky - strange that you are using an old version of Firefox(?)  Grin
BTW That clipboard bug is a combined Firefox/Flash vulnerability and it doesn't affect Linux systems (reputedly).  Grin Grin Grin

You probably can upgrade the Eeepc, but it aint easy, I did try once on their upgrade button, but dont think it actually did anything, it does all I want, its got a full Open office, web Thunderbird mail, used it on three holidays so far, Cornwall - free web at pub I stayed in, Oban Scotland same again, Just back from Cardigan, said they charged £1.5 a day, but didnt reach bill so more than pleased.
