Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

Does the Technicolor TG582n not support WOL?
I have a Mac mini that runs in headless mode and goes to sleep when not in use.
On previous router (sky supplied sr101) i could wake up the mac mini simply by trying to access it via the network.
Now when using the Technicolor TG582n, the mac mini doesn't appear to wake up.
So, is WOL not supported in this router, or does it need to be manually configured to do so?

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

I don't know the answer to your question but I have found that when waking my Win7 computer from sleep it couldn't see the LAN but did have full internet access.
I fixed that by disabling the firewall in the router - and I have no idea why that worked but it may be worth a try

firewall only affects incoming external traffic, so would have no affect on WOL or internal traffic.

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

to be fair, your issue not not the same as what i am talking about.
i have no issues seeing local LAN once a device awakes from sleep.
also, you don't want to be disabling the firewall, as that allows all incoming connections to come thru unfiltered.

Perhaps you only need to do steps 2 and/or 3 from http://npr.me.uk/wol.html

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

i saw that previously, however that suggests that you need to do it for each and every device manually, which is not ideal (and might suggest that you can only do it for one device).
any previous router i've used did not require a specific rule to be set up and then configured for an individual device.... it "just worked" with no manual config.
i need it to work for any device that is not the network.

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

The above link is to configure WOL from the internet.
If you need to wake the pc from the lan then you don't need to do anything with the Technicolor router, it should just work.
If you wish to wake a number of devices at the same time from the internet then replace the device MAC address, in the above link, with a broadcast MAC address.
Don't remember the details but should be easy to find from google.

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

yeah, i'm not talking about waking up via the internet, this is all local network traffic... and it doesn't seem to be working as it should.

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

so this is still not working.
mac mini is not being woken up by WOL requests.
the mac mini is still visible as a device on the network when sleeping (as it should), but the WOL request is obviously not being sent to the mac mini.

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

Local WOL shouldn't be affected by the router as you're only using the hardware switch within the router given you're not leaving Layer 2.
Put another machine on the LAN and run a packet sniffer like Wireshark to check that the WOL packet is being correctly sent out.
You could also try temporarily putting your Sky router back in play (it doesn't need connecting to the Internet) and repeating the above tests.

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

it works 100% of the time with the sky router.
i don't have another machine to put on the LAN, just the mac mini, and the macbook pro that i'm using to try and wake it up (via screen sharing).

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

You could always run the packet sniffer on the Mac mini just to check that the switch in the router is passing the WOL packet through. I can't imagine why it wouldn't, but then residential routers are well known for not always behaving themselves.

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

would the packet sniffer do anything on the mac mini considering it's asleep at the time?

Re: Technicolor TG582n - Wake On LAN?

I meant run it whilst the machine is on!  Smiley
The test is only to verify that the magic packet is at least reaching the machine.
