Anyone have experience of one of these "cheap and cheerful" devices - preferably on a long, high attn line? (My line: 4.5+km and about 61dB)
I currently use a 4yo TG585v7 from PN with the latest firmware (from PN) and have been having problems recently - eg Sync going from 3.3Mbps/3dB to 917kbps/17.5dB between midnight and 6AM yesterday (13th Oct) with bursts of 3dB oscillations in the SNRM figures (though the 585 granularity is 0.5dB). It also seems to have "rain intolerance" and to be displaying the "Broadcom SNRM bleed" - ramping down the SNRM, partially recovering and repeating until a retrain occurs. I'm looking for a cheap item (almost "disposable" category) as a comparator and possible (short term) replacement, preferably with a different chipset (the 8816v7 has Trendchip, I believe).
Strangely, for the last 15 hours after being powered down for 30+ minutes, the SNRM has been an almost flat 7.5dB at 3.4Mbps.
Just to confirm, I'm not (yet) asking for help/advice about possible SRNM or line problems, just for comments on the 8816 or any other similar device (low cost supporting 1ethernet, no wireless).
Thanks,
Phil

I've used a TP-Link 8840-T in the past which does have a Trend Chipset and it performed well, I am also about 4.5Km from the exchange. The odd thing is 8840-T comes up with 59db where as the Thomson TG585 comes up with 51db I would still be using the 8840-T if it wasn't for the need for a second wireless access point
From my research Broadcom Chipset devices are reckon to be better for long distances from the exchange.

Thanks Dan,
At £10.33 delivered from Amazon it will not break the bank if not very good, though this Canadian thread rates it well
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r23681143-Re-TPLink-TD8816-GOOD-MODEM
which also implies all Broadcom units have a SRNM "bleed" problem - though I've just noticed it's 2010 and probably TD8816v3
My TG585 is from before then, though
Phil
