Thanks Dan,

I was sent a link to updated firmware by someone else which works fine now! I have no idea why the original version didn't work. Maybe yours was  a different firmware. (I didn't note down the original version on mine!)

It's now running fine on: firmware:  1.2.0 0.9.1 v00a1.0 Build 201106 Rel.37585n

There is now a new released firmware update available

Latest Version: 1.3.0 0.9.1 v00a1.0 Build 201109 Rel.54507n

Release Note:
1. Optimized the IPsec VPN stability of the Archer VR400
2. Updated the driver of the DSL
3. Optimized the security performance

Note: for Archer VR400(EU) 3.0

Thanks for mentioning that there's new firmware. I looked on:

  https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/download/archer-vr400/#Firmware

but saw only the original firmware. Is the new version posted on a different page? Or maybe it's not released yet for UK users.

The update firmware is available via

router Advanced >System Tools >Firmware Upgrade 

Tether app Tools >System >Firmware Update
