TP Link 9980 connection problems

Hi all,
I'm a new plusnet ADSL user and had my line activated today. It works absolutely fine using the plusnet supplied router and connected perfectly first time. I have an existing ADSL router that I would like to use but it seems to be misbehaving and I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious. It's a TP-link 9980, and I see from a quick forum search that there are others who use this router, seemingly with no issues.
I've gone through the quick setup, using the details provided on the plusnet website and put in my username and password. It seems to be happy with all the details, and begins a handshake with the ADSL connection. The ADSL light flashes and looks like it connects (it goes on solid) then the internet status light comes on solid, but only for 1 or 2 seconds. They then both turn off and it tries again. If I watch the router config status page, it flashes up with upstream/downstream information but again only very briefly before dropping the connection and trying to connect again. Has anyone else had this issue or know how to fix it?
Any help massively appreciated.
Kind regards,
Nathan

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

I dont know if your router is better than the plusnet supplied one but from what I have read on here it is better to wait
until the 10 day "training" is over before swapping routers. Switching between them is likely to reduce the speed
you are left with at the end of the 10 days. Especially if your TP link is not working correctly..

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

That sounds sensible I'm working with the plusnet one just now. The main reason for wanting to swap is just because my other router has gigabit ethernet for file streaming and things.
I'll hold off trying too much for a couple of weeks.
Cheers,

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

The username will need to have @plusdsl.net after it just in case you didn't know that.
Is there a button on the left hand side that says network? If it does, try find wan settings or the equivelent page where you can type settings in.
If you find it then;
VPI = 0
VCI = 38
Idle timeout = 0
Connection type/status = Always on.
Let me know if you need any other details/any problems Smiley
Can't think of any reason that should stop it being possible to use.

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

As long as you have a recent f/w on the box, PN should be in the dropdown isp selector.
Make sure your PASSWord is corrEctly done. Have a look in the logs to see if it is a ppp authentication error, if it is then it is username/password are wrong.

but I would guess that most people on here are using it for VDSL on a Fibre connection.

@HB, does that have options for VDSL and ADSL ?

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

Latest firmware ( dated 7/5/15 ) for the TP Link TD W9980 is here:
http://uk.tp-link.com/download/TD-W9980.html#Firmware
The user guide also on that link near the top of the page covers updating the firmware, its a simple process & takes less then 5 minutes..

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

@MrW, I believe so, the fact is I have only ever used it on fibre, but there is no reason they wouldn't have the same isp menu on both.

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

Thanks for your suggestions everyone.
I do have the latest firmware installed and there is the option of ADSL plusnet in the dropdown.  I tried using that and also tried completely manual connection, but neither worked. TP link support just asked me to try a couple of different modulation types, as the ADSL light is supposed to stay on solidly, even if I don't have the broadband connection set up. I'll give this a try after the line has settled for a while.
I did have a look in the log, and there was no mention of ppp authentication error. The only error I can spot is this:
220 1970-01-01 00:00:58 PPP Error ppp1
221 1970-01-01 00:00:58 PPP Error ppp1 Timeout waiting for PADO packets

For now it's working as a bridge modem which does what it needs to do. I'd just prefer to get rid of one piece of hardware if I can - that's why I got the ADLS version of the TP-link. Incidentally, would that reduce the speed I can expect? (using bridge mode I mean) Our suggested line speed was 15Mb but we're barely at 6 at the moment.
I'll let you know if I get any success.
Cheers,
Nathan

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

If the ADSL light isn't solid the there is a problem somewhere, have you tried a different cable from the socket to the router?

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

Actually no I haven't tried that but it works fine with the plusnet router. Might this suggest faulty TP-link router?

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

"Timeout waiting for PADO packets" sounds like it's trying to do PPPoE. Make sure "Operation Mode" is set to "xDSL Modem Router Mode".

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

I tried a different phoneline cable. It didn't help.
I realise that's the wrong segment of log. This is more like what happens:
1 1970-01-01 07:01:59 DSL Notice xdsl HANDSHAKE!!
2 1970-01-01 07:01:56 DSL Notice xdsl READY!!
3 1970-01-01 07:01:53 DSL Notice xDSL Leave SHOWTIME!!
4 1970-01-01 07:01:52 DSL Notice xdsl HANDSHAKE!!
5 1970-01-01 07:01:49 DSL Notice xdsl READY!!
6 1970-01-01 07:01:46 DSL Notice xDSL Leave SHOWTIME!!
7 1970-01-01 07:01:45 DSL Notice xdsl HANDSHAKE!!

Also managed to capture this image: it does connect but then it just quits after about 5 seconds. Does this help identify the problem in any way?

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

Not particularly helpful I'm afraid. It should be set for PPPoA and VC-MUX (Encapsulation Mode setting becomes visible after clicking Advance in ATM Configuration).

Re: TP Link 9980 connection problems

Might be worth doing a factory reset on the router, and trying again. That sometimes helps.
If it still fails then probably a faulty router.
