TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

I've recently signed up to plusnet and got this router as part of the connection package. It is running at 5.5mbps over wifi and I can't seem to work out why. I've browsed these forums and can't see any obvious thing which would explain it. If I telnet in and look at the config I get:
Quote
{admin}=>wireless ifconfig

Oper State              : enabled
Network name (SSID)     : PlusnetWireless793613

I've tried setting the radio settings to:
Quote
wireless radio channelwidth=20 sgi=disabled

but no obvious outcome and certainly no change in speed. The firmware looks up to date running 10.2.2.B and the only client is connected using 802.11n
Any suggestions on what might be the problem?

Re: TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

Does the wireless client report the same 5.5Mb rate?
What actual speed do you get over the wireless?

Re: TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

Yes, it fluctuates between 2 and 5mb if I watch the network connection properties.

Also, I tested the same device against a friends WiFi 802.11n network and got in excess of 30mb speeds, so my suspicions are with the Technicolor gateway.

Re: TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

I had same, with ONE android device 2M away from the router 5.5Mb.
Pitiful is not the word I would use.
I posted a list of the wifi round here earlier, lots of BT & a couple of TT routers. I get a STRONGER signal from the BT router across the road in the NEXT room than I did from the 582.
The 589 is a bit better in that it can hold 56Mb which is almost acceptable.

This router can be tweaked to do better - see http://NPR.me.uk

Re: TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

The problem is consistent with a poor wireless signal. Besides trying different channels, you could try changing the position or orientation of the router. A 582n might just about balance vertically on its side.

Re: TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

Thanks, I doubt it is a signal strength problem. I have the thing right next to my machine and have tried in all kinds of positions to see if there is a difference. Townman, I'm not totally savvy with all the info on that site. Anything you suggest to try tweaking to improve things?

Might be worth looking for updated drivers for your wireless adaptor.

Re: TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

I would suggest trying for an update on your Wireless Card (drivers). Do you have any other electronic devices located close to the router?

Re: TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

Seriously. Update the drivers on the unit. What if there is NO updates.
There have been MULTIPLE complaints about the PP wifi on these devices for YEARS now.
With it in the SAME position, SAME channel it gives me wifi B speed compared to the 589.
Maybe in an open field test it delivers but in a normal congested house it is just a waste of electric if you want to use wifi.

Re: TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

You do have the option of buying something different.  No one forces you to use the ISP offered router.  It is quite adequate for most peoples requirements.  As I've reported before, I covered most of a country pub with a TG582n.

How many wifi networks were around the county pub? Not many I would bet.
Maybe it is a "free" router but it still doesn't work well. Many people DON'T know the difference you can get from a better router, even a HH3 has better wifi and you can get them on freecycle! I know I got one there.

Re: TG582n running at 5.5mbps on 802.11n

My network drivers are up to date. I've also tried with a few other devices during testing to eliminate potential card issues and the issue remains. I've checked channels and there is no conflict with neighbourhood network channels. To me, it looks like the router is defaulting to a low rate. I've also restarted the router on a number of occasions during testing.

Do you see an improvement, out of interest with your router away from your PC (anything else electrical)?
