TBB vs Pingtest.net

Just wondered why there would be a discrepancy between the results from the above two tests.  According to TBB I've had a pretty stable connection all day while pingtest.net shows me losing packets left right and centre since around 14:55 today:

and it's been going in a similar vein ever since then,

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

Are you running the pingtest.net over wired or wireless (or even powerline)?

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

tests are only run on fixed connection, i.e. direct Ethernet cable between router and PC
edit: both tests were run from the same PC, which is why I can't understand the discrepancy.  Even now when I look at the TBB graph it says I've had a smooth run all afternoon which hasn't been my experience!

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

That's quite a big discrepancy, how do speed tests on speedtest.net and TBB compare?

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

just to underline the point, here's the latest from pingtest.net, while TBB looks like I've drawn a horizontal line with a ruler:

I'll check speedtest.net now

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

speedtest.net has me at a whopping 1MB download speed, also with exceptionally high ping:

and from TBB:

sorry, can't seem to paste picture from there:(
but it's 2.6MB up and 0.2MB down

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

A few things...
Do the IP addresses http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping and http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ip.html match?
If you go Start > Run > cmd and type ping 80.249.99.164 -n 100 then post the summary at the end here.

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

Also do ping x.x.x.x  -n 100 where x.x.x.x is your router IP (e.g. 192.168.1.1)

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

I'm wondering if the fact that both sites will be using servers in different locations could possibly affect that? If they did I'm not sure if would be to that extent for either ping or speedtests though. Try http://www.speedtester.bt.com and see what that says.

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

TBB is checking the connection from the Internet to your router, pingtest.net and speedtest.net are testing all the way back to your machine. That kinda points towards a problem between machine and router. The results of the extended ping to the router would be interesting to see.

I'd have thought pathping would be a better diagnostic:

Re: TBB vs Pingtest.net

Hi all,
many thanks for the suggestions and apologies for the delay in replying but it seems to have stabilised over the last three days, ever since I changed my Technicolor router for my old Netgear one.  I'm getting more consistency now and no huge variations
