Re: Sync speed and IP Profile anomaly?

FAO, Tony.

Line stable for 4 days, 12h and 46m with SNRM falling slightly to 6.9 and down attenuation also stable at 17.5.

Errors are creeping up:-

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 279 / 20.530
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 447 / 24.418

Re: Sync speed and IP Profile anomaly?

Thought I'd give an update.

Last evening, c.18.45, we had a mains outage. Prior to that the BB connection had been up and 100% stable for several days (though I can't be certain about Wed 11th to Monday 17th as we were away).

This time the reconnect was at a higher, not lower, speed. Down: speed 17.046, line attenuation 17.5db, SNRM 6.6db, errors: FEC zero, CRC 2.112, HEC 4.873.

Re: Sync speed and IP Profile anomaly?

FAO Tony

BT/OR have been but no new master socket.

This is because the previous BT guy gave me incorrect information.

First, picture the circuit: external drop line enters house and a BT cable goes to master socket in the hall. An analog phone (for emergency use) is connected here and an extension cable is taken from the rear of this box upstairs to an extension socket (no phone attached) into which is plugged a cable to an adjacent room just feet away and that goes to a Belkin surge protection board: the router and a DECT phone are connected (phone by a filter) here. This circuit has been in use for 20 years with no problems until Dec 15 and throughout 2016.

The last BT guy explained that the new master socket (5C Mk4) had RF filtering etc. and could be placed just before the router if I wished rather than replacing the current one. My concern was that, the way he explained it, I would lose phone signal at the upstairs study which wasn't acceptable to me (but afterwards I figured all I needed to do was swap the DECT base & satellite units!).

The guy today said that is completely wrong: it is the broadband that will disappear upstairs if I replace the existing master socket! This entails moving the router downstairs and rendering the PC unusable until I buy a wi-fi dongle for the PC or using TP-Link mains broadband (which entails rewiring the house!) none of which I wish to do just yet.

So, no wiring change is feasible right now.

The good news is that our BB connection seems to be rock solid albeit with errors at a similar level to when sync was 21.499 in August.

My sync today is 17.06 and SNRM 6 to 6.6 so the line should run at 3db OK (2.6 in August).

In September d/l speed (Ookla) was 18.25 which translates to a profile of 21.

PN has, a couple or three times since Dec 15, adjusted the SNRM/DLM to give a higher line speed so please now reset my profile as high as possible (back to 21 or more - I'm happy with 18.25mbps).

Thanks for all of your help.

Re: Sync speed and IP Profile anomaly?

Thanks, Tony.

FYI, that disconnect/connect was iffy as the stats post reconnect are identical to pre disconnect.

However there was an outage a couple of minutes after your call with these results:-

DSL stats:- sync - 19.387, SNRM down 3.1

Speed (Ookla) - 16.87/1.01

I'll keep an eye on this and repost on Thursday.

Many thanks for your help thus far.

Re: Sync speed and IP Profile anomaly?

That will be my reset. I wasn't expecting it to happen so quick. I change the profile on our side first, so although it's wrong, it's the maximum level that we can provide. That saves you have to do a PPP drop later.

Re: Sync speed and IP Profile anomaly?

Just typical: yesterday, starting at c.17.15, we had a 7 hour mains outage!

Stats today:-

DSL: sync: 19.759; down attn 17.5; down SNRM 2.3. Some CRC and HEC errors.

Speed: Ookla 17.03; thinkbroadband (alt test) 16.85, burst 16.89

So far, so good.

Re: Sync speed and IP Profile anomaly?

Back to square one.

Outage at 19.10, reconnect data, DSL only: sync 18.403. SNRM 3.0

Outage at 19.12, reconnect data, DSL: sync 18.391, SNRM 3.2; speed c.14 (see last post!)

Outage at 19.19 - details to follow

To me, this proves once and for all that there is a serious fault on our line.
