Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

For over a year I had a sync of around 3000 kbps which would vary each time I powered up the router.
A few weeks ago I seemed to get a fixed sync of 2272  each time I connected, yesterday it dropped to approx 1000 then 575 and this morning is still 575 kbps down and 446 kbps up.
I think this can be explained by an increase in the SN margin from approx. 3dB to a current 15.5dB.
The best IP profile I ever had was 3000 but I was happy to get 2000 and normally had 2500, it is now 350.
BT speedtester results are currently:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 228 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 100-500 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :572 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 444 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 350 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 15.81:25.34:58.84 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
N.B. I am on a long line and my attenuation is 65.5dB. A quiet line test using 17070 did not reveal any noise on the line
Before I start the usual things like: replacing micro-filters, trying a new router, using the test socket, raising a fault, wandering around with a MW radio etc.  Are there any problems showing up in the RADIUS logs which might point to a problem?

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

Where are you?  South London?  My SNR has gone from 3dB to 16dB and now 21dB.  Speed down from 11MB to 3MB.  All happened since 2pm Aug 24th.  There have been a few problems with BT and ADSL 21CN over the last few days - so I'm expecting it's down to that.  I wonder if you are in South London and were inpacted by the same problem.
Your speed to little better than a modem so it needs to be sorted.  They can force your SNR back to 3 and reset your BT IP profile.  My IP profile is at 2500, where it was previously around 11000.

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

Question #34882553   (details of my fault)
SNR has gone from 3 to 21 on Aug 24th ~2pm. Speed now down from over 11mb to 3mb and speed profile set to 2500 according to BT web site. There have been a couple of faults locally in South London due to BT work. Please can you reset SNR back to 3 and speed profile back to 11mb.
There was a previous problem, 32502466, related from quite a while back. Home telephone number xxxxxxxxxxx, username: xxxxxxxxxx. No changes to local setup were made recently. No noise on the phone line. This all happened in the last few days and coincides with a couple of problems on the 21CN in South London.

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

I am connect to the Bracknell exchange.
I have tried a spare router and new micro-filters, no change.
Next to try is the MW radio, something may have increased the noise on my line and then I will change onto the master socket, this involves moving furniture and computer kit, must get around to sorting out my laptop or getting a netbook.

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

Didn't help that BT did maintenance work last night from around 00:45 to almost 6am this morning without telling PlusNet --- or perhaps PlusNet forgot to tell anyone else.   Line was up and down all night according to my router logs (which get saved to USB on the router).
LATE (VERY LATE) this morning Plus fessed up.   I love have they used the word "Resolved" when PlusNet never sent out an email, nor updated their status page, when the fault was in progress.   It seems they can't be monitoring things properly, or perhaps people were sleeping on the night shift (it happens).   If I sound frustrated I am.  I know it took them around one week to sort out my speed problems last time.   It took over 6 days to find the right level of support and the right person in support, and then about 30 minutes to fix the problem.
(In the meantime I've on the Virgin Media web site seeing what it will cost to boot PlusNet and BT in to touch).   Whilst PlusNet is a very good service provider, they are not great at fixing these sorts of problems.   As for BT, they had to pay me £60 compensation the last time I had broadband with them, because the service was so shocking.

Subject: Problems connecting on 21CN in Greater London (63234) - Resolved
We have been informed that maintenance work on 21CN in the Greater London area during the early hours of this morning have affected a number of customers. This is now resolved and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Should you still be experiencing difficulties then we would advise you to power down your router for 60 minutes before trying to reconnect.

If your line goes up and down too often the exchange end will lower the speed to maintain a stable line.  The line goes down VERY VERY fast and stays there for a LOOOOG time.  You will need to check your router stats.  What is the max line speed it says is obtainable, and what speed has it synced at.  Then raise a ticket with PlusNet and ask them to lower your SNR and reset the BT IP profile.  I had to do this before ---- I almost left PlusNet.  It's all about getting to the right people in the UK support office --- they can flick switches and make it happen.  However, be warned, if you power off/on your router it may see that as noise and then go back to the old setting.  If you are going to improve line/cable/sockets, do it right and do it once, and do it before you get PlusNet to reset things.    BT network in South London has had a few hickups over the last week or two.  I rebooted my router around 2pm on 24th and it immediately dropped from 3dB to 16dB and is now at 21dB.  I only rebooted my router because I had BT-related problems --- otherwise I never reboot it.

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

Nothing in the house is generating exceptional electrical noise, I turned the consumer unit off using the main switch and then wandered around with the radio.
No change from when I wandered about before turning the power off and again after I turned it back on.
Will try again after dark in case is is a faulty street light or other interference causing item that is only on at certain times of day e.g. neighbours old TV, my TV etc.
Now onto moving furniture and using the master test socket.
RADIUS log information might help to narrow it down if it shows lots of disconnects in a short interval at certain times of the day.

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

No change when using the master socket, the slow speed reminded me that the first modem I used was rated at 300 baud down and 75 up.
We were really pleased when the 1200 baud modems became cheap enough for the company I then worked for to purchase.
56k dial up was just a dream and broadband a fantasy.
I am now showing how long I have worked with computers for and how old I am.
The next step, I guess, is to wait and see if a PlusNet member of staff can provide RADIUS log information, to return everything to normal, leave the ADSL router powered up for a week or two and see how many disconnects occur and if the sync improves or (god forbid) gets any worse.
FTTC RFS date 01/12/2010, hope my local cabinet is going to be included, there are no delays and that this problem is solved before then.

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

As I said, PlusNet are one of the better ISPs, but very very slow to fix speed problems.
<a href="http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk"><img src="http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/results/46200921.png" /></a>
My speed is now 2.3MB, it was 11MB.

When I looked through my speed test results over on the PlusNet control panel this morning, someone has removed my previous 11MB score.  Luckily I saved the results previously to a file, and took screenshots, so my Vigor router records all the line information every few seconds to a USB key plugged in to it --- I have all the data from March 2010 --- Every Few Seconds.
The results from my PlusNet previous speed tests, from the raw CSV file, were:

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

Speed test results are only retained on-line for a short period.
No change in my sync speed today, still at 575. No disconnects overnight.
Why do these things always happen just before a bank holiday, my previous problem occurred on the Thursday before a bank holiday,
Openreach investigated and came back late on Friday with: No fault found at the exchange to investigate further would require a visit to my house. This could not be booked until Tuesday and they visited on Thursday.
After checking using my master socket they then checked the line all the way back to the exchange and found the problem in the exchange!!
It was caused when my line was moved to ADSL2+, it was part of the trial so I was expecting a few problems.
I am going to open a ticket and see if someone in Plusnet can check the RADIUS logs, the line etc.

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

I've spoken to PlusNet - the MyBroadBand checker uses cookies to store results - so when you view it on different machines you get different history/speed check results.
Date Download Speed Upload Speed
Yesterday 16:49 2367 kbps (296kB/s) 572 kbps (71.5kB/s) Share

So going back to my laptop I find the results are there.  How very confusing ---- sorry for accusing PlusNet of removing the result.  Now please fix my line.  2.5MB when I had 11MB a few days ago is a joke.  They also said they weren't working on my ticket because it was a question and apparently I didn't raise it in the right way --- you have to go to http://faults.plus.net/ and so I'll have to raise it all over again and cut and paste the info from the question.  This is what happens when your web site isn't clear.  Cry

Re: Sync dropped from approx 3000 to 575kbps

Just raised a ticket [34903069] and am waiting for a response, at least I still have a connection even if it is very slow.
