Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

Hi Plusnet,
I've enjoyed a rock solid connection for many months now despite some initial teething problems moving over to ADSL2. However, since between 8am-9am yesterday (28th Nov) I've had a number of disconnects - 20+ in probably about as many hours. Could I get you take a look?
I've been away from home all week and so whilst my wife has been in there have been no changes of equipment/configuration etc. I can't think of any other external factors at play that wouldn't normally be.
If I can provide any further details I'd be happy to oblige. I did consider just 'riding it out' in case it's a transient issue, and indeed would be content to do so if that's your advice, however given how out of the ordinary it is (for me) I thought I might as well give it a mention in case anything does actually need sorting.
Regards,
Mathew

Re: Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

Hi MJN,
I've just been looking into this, I thought you might find a graph of your connection logs both interesting and very contrasting:
<img src="http://ccgi.psmith12.plus.com/visradius/generated/image13541967117619.png"/><div style="clear:both;"></div>
I'm also noticing that the downstream SNR margin is 2.8db which could be very low indeed considering the speeds you'd normally be able to connect at.
I take it you've not noticed any issues using the phone?

Re: Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

Hi Adam,
Thanks for that. It is indeed interesting and accords exactly with what I've seen from my own logs - rock solid for ages and they all mayhem since yesterday!
As mentioned I haven't been at home so cannot comment on the phone issue. however I'll be calling up tonight so will be able to report back then.

Re: Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

To follow-up the above, I've just been on the phone to home and there were no apparent issues with the call.
The last reconnection seems to have been around 1850hrs, having been offline for 30 mins or so by the looks of things (or at least not up for the 10 minute cycle checks - it could've been up and down in the interim periods).

Re: Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

Hi there,
It seems that you have still had disconnections since your phone call;
<img src="http://ccgi.psmith12.plus.com/visradius/generated/image13542694371869.png"/>
I'd suggest running through the checks at http://faults.plus.net and if the problem still persists then we will investigate this further.
Let me know how you get on or if you've got any questions.

Re: Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

Hi Chris,
Yes, quite a few disconnections this morning.
When I get home after the weekend I'll run through the fault checks and take things from there.

Somewhat unhelpful but after many days absolutely stable connection this happened this morning and I have no idea why
Note that the sync changed from 4672/448 to 4100/128 and it was only when I did a manual resync at 10.00 this morning that it sorted itself out

@oldjim
Had a look over your connection and can't see anything obvious, although your line did have a higher error rate yesterday than any other day over the past 2 weeks. It now appears to be running as it was though.

Re: Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

Looking at my connection - it's done it again - I can only surmise that it doesn't like cold weather  Crazy as it dropped as soon as the temperature dropped below zero again

Re: Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

When this behaviour happened to me I raised a fault.  I faffed around for several days without success, then the problem went away by itself.  I have absolutely no reason to blame the fact that TalkTalk coincidently installed LLU in my exchange.  I just do.  Tongue

Re: Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

I'm back home now and was all set to go through the fault diagnosis process but then saw that my reconnections have all but gone - only three for the entire weekend which is nothing compared to earlier in the week. This is pure conjecture but I live in Malmesbury and the exchange is not all that far from where they've had some pretty bad flooding and so I wondered if it might've been to do with that.
So, with things seemingly working okay I figured setting your guys on to a fault check could turn out to be a wild goose chase and so I thought I'd see how things pan out from here. However, having looked at my router stats it's not painting a pretty picture!

I am used to an 8,000-odd downstream and so the current 1,150 is obviously not good! Could this just be down to the recent connection flapping?

Re: Sudden bout of frequent reconnections

Hi there,
Yes it will almost certainly be down to that. If it's definitely stable now we could look at doing an SNR reset but I'm not sure if it's just stabilised because of the higher SNR/lower sync speed. To be honest I think you'd be better raising a fault just to make sure there are no faults on the line - even though your SNR has risen to 12dB this certainly shouldn't have lowered the sync speed by any more than ~1.5Mb.
