Strange upload figures

This is more out of curioisity than anything else, but I'd still like an explanation if there is one.
The attached image is of my BitMeter stats covering a period whilst I was out - therefore no-one was using my lappy, but I see activity during that time.
I am aware that there is background communication, but what I don't understand is why my upload figure is so relatively high?
Any answers gratefully received.

Re: Strange upload figures

No chance RR - I have never installed anything of that nature on this machine and never would.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: Strange upload figures

AVG 2012  - which has been installed for 12 months plus, This increased upload when I'm not using the machine is a relatively new occurrence.
I'll have a dig back in the log later and post a  snap to illustrate.this.
oops sorry - can't do that. I didn't realise BitMeter only retained the current months figures in hourly form, and this has been happening for a while now.

Re: Strange upload figures

You don't say which firewall you are using but you should investigate one which includes monitoring of which programs are sending and receiving data as this will show what is doing it

Re: Strange upload figures

Jim
I only have the DG834G firewall - and can't remember how to set it up to log incoming/outgoimg logs.
Sorry it took a while to respond, I had connection/browser problems. Sad

Re: Strange upload figures

If you are running Windows XP SP2 or any later version, then Windows has a built-in firewall that will be on unless instructed otherwise.  I have never seen the Windows built-in firewall give problems.

Never had one on this machine. I had one on the desktop before I got the router (Comodo if I remember correctly), but was told by my IT guy that for the kind of use my machines get that the router fw was sufficient.
Unfortunately, the DG834Gv5 I am currently using does not (by default) display these logs, although I know there is a way to enable them.
Any of you tech guys able to give me a guide on this?  - I did have it enabled at one time but had to do a factory reset, and fogot how I'd done it.

Re: Strange upload figures

I don't know which firewalls give what you need but in Kaspersky I have this and the router only logs what goes in or out not which application initiates it

Re: Strange upload figures

Thanks Jim.
I'll have a word with my new IT man when I have a bit of spare time.
As an aside, going back to the question of what could be 'calling home', I think AVG does but I have disabled that now.
Mind you, I would have thought the greater figure in that case would have been when I was using the machie? Huh
