Strange email about domain renewal

I recently received a Service Notice [SN48285308] about a domain I registered with PN.
The registration expires on the 31st March 2008.
This domain is set to expire, according to the settings on the portal, however the email tells a different story.

Dear Mr James_H,
This is an email from PlusNet to let you know that your domain,
James_Hs_old_domain.co.uk, will expire on 31 March 2008.
We have noticed that you have not yet chosen to renew this domain. We will
automatically renew it for you 30 days before the expiry date.
To choose not to renew your domain, please visit the Domain Names section
of our website - http://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=domainv2

Yet the settings on the portal state:
Quote
Your domain, www.James_Hs_old_domain.co.uk is set to expire on 2008-03-31
Your hosting for domain, www.James_Hs_old_domain.co.uk is set to expire on 2007-03-31
You can find our latest pricing here (subject to T&C's)
Your current domain configuration means you will lose your domain, James_Hs_old_domain.co.uk, when it expires.
If you wish to keep your domain after this date, click here.

Confused by the fact that the email doesn't reflect the options I chose some time ago on the portal - also strange that the two don't say the same thing.
Can somebody confirm that the domain *will* expire as per the portal setting, and perhaps have a look to figure why the email seems misleading.
Or have I misread something?

Re: Strange email about domain renewal

Hi James,
I can't search by Service Notice unfortunately.
If you'd like to give me a ticket number from the account, or PM me the username/domain name I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

Re: Strange email about domain renewal

James - the same thing happened when one of my domains was due to expire in 2007. I had set it deliberately to say that I didn't want to renew it. Yet like you, I still got the email saying PN were going to renew it automatically.

Did it renew, or expire?

I had to get in touch with PN to confirm that it would expire - and it did.

Sounds like a duff message then.
Perhaps it happens every time, and there's just us two that have ever read it. Shocked

Re: Strange email about domain renewal

I'll be raising a problem first thing in the morning to get this sorted.
If it's just incorrect wording on the email/email sent in error it will be fixed very quickly. Otherwise it's going to need to go down to our dev team to fix.
Either way I'll be able to confirm this tomorrow.

Re: Strange email about domain renewal

I've just had one of these
'We have noticed that you have not yet chosen to renew this domain. We will
automatically renew it for you 30 days before the expiry date.'
I had of course intentionally set it not to be renewed and assumed that it would automatically lapse.
there seems to be no way on the PN site to actively say
I DO NOT WISH TO RENEW  THIS DOMAIN
I do regard this with some suspicion - given previous posts on the topic - is it a ploy to get renewal monies by default??  I hope not.
please make it possible to say 'no renewall thank you' rather than just not opting in to renewal
best
