Hello.
I'm sill on ordinary up to 8mb and am not interested in upgrading to fibre / my hardware. My hardware is old but reliable. I was just having a quick check up on various utilities and see that "standard" broadband now seems to offer "up to 17mb". Even PlusNet's standard came up as "up to 17mb".
I've just tried the "change your package" link in my account but I only have the option to keep what I have or upgrade to a fibre product.
Can I not have the 17mb option for the same cost as I pay now?
Thank you.

Put your phone number in the DSL Checker, it will let you know what options you have.

@monkeyexpressPF alas yes, you are correct, guessing you are on a rural exchange that has not yet been upgraded to 21CN/ADSL2, and as you could get good speeds on FTTC, you may have to wait a while to get ADSL2, if ever.

Just to put this in context, check this ISPReview article from 2013. We were lucky our exchange was upgraded in mid 2017! FTTP 'planned' by 2020 BT does indeed move very slowly in some areas.

Just for clarity, why do you think that you are on up to 8Mbps?
Depending on the length of your line, there's more than a fair chance that you cannot get more than 8Mbps even if on ADLS2.
Checking back to the availability checker screen grab (no exchange identified) it clearly does not show ADSL2 / 21CN offering. Are you on the MRSTO exchange or some sub-exchange of Stockport?

Yes thanks, as you say !RSTO is adsl2 and having telnetted into my router it is saying it has an adsl2 connection. It's just line losses that are cutting it back to 8355 mb of which very little can be done .

@Browni - looking back in the warm light of day ... I see that we both got confused by the "me too" posting here. That screen grab was a different user - @monkeyexpressPF who has not returned to the topic.
@limpopobongo - I take it that your line attenuation is greater than 40dB?
