Steam Downloads

Hey folks Smiley
I have recently started to re download my Steam library after my operating system decided to go kaput  Roll_eyes
The only problem I have is the speed.  Every time I go on Steam, the best speed I see is about 200.0KB/s Sad  Other downloads are fine and download at about 650 - 700KB/s, it is just Steam that doesn't want to download at those speeds.  Is it that Steam downloads get limited?  Is it traffic management?
I am on Plusnet Unlimited btw :).

Re: Steam Downloads

Aha!  I think I fixed it.  In the settings, I changed the "approximate speed of your internet connection" to  DSL/Cable > 2M.

Re: Steam Downloads

Aren't downloads (from content servers) on the Unlimited product limited to 2Mbps (250kB/s) until midnight?

Re: Steam Downloads

If that is true, is there any way to ask plusnet to remove the restriction or will I have to move products?

Re: Steam Downloads

Hi theberrys,
Steam should run at line speed. We've just been testing it and we get line speed. Is it wired or wireless? Is someone else using your network at the same time? Is something else running on your computer at the same time?

Re: Steam Downloads

Might be an idea to check using a local bandwidth monitor (like this one). That will tell you what your cumulative bandwidth is to/from the machine it's installed on. If that's maxing out at line speed but steam still shows ~200kB/s download speeds then something else must be using the connection.
FWIW, I've just opened Steam on my home machine and it started downloading three game updates at line speed (Extra)...

Re: Steam Downloads

Is it wired or wireless?
Yes, but that shouldn't affect it.  I tried downloading kaspersky antivirus trial and I got max speed (~600KB/s)
Is someone else using your network at the same time?
Just me on at the moment.
Is something else running on your computer at the same time?
I shut down all other programs open that would access the internet.
Cheers
When I stated a steam download yesterday,  for 5 minutes it is at 600KB/s and then it drops down to 200KB/s for the rest of the time
