Static IP gone missing after a few days

I have had a static IP for about 8 years now and rely on it daily for work. I've moved house once in that time and Plusnet were able to keep the IP, and also kept it when we upgraded to full fibre. It seemed to follow me to our new address a week ago, but I noticed yesterday that I've fallen onto a different static IP. Support didn't really know what to suggest but implied maybe I had lost my old IP. Luckily I can still see my static IP listed within my account page, but this is still causing me enormous stress!

Re: Static IP gone missing after a few days

A static IP address is attached to an account, not the connecting line. Therefore it will follow you on an address change.

Also if you gift / sell an old Plusnet router to someone WITHOUT doing a reset AND asking Plusnet to remove the router’s serial number from the automatic configuration platform … that router could still operate using your account / IP address. Changing the account password whilst the device is still known to the automatic configuration platform will not help any.

You would then get some random IP address assigned, as the same IP address cannot be assigned to two connections.

How have you affirmed that you do not have the IP address you expect? And to be sure .., is there a VPN involved here?

Thanks for replying @Townman. I haven't done anything with my account password, and am in fact using the same Draytek VPN/firewall/router I was using at my last address (although I've moved to using VDSL for obvious reasons as there's no FTTP here yet). I did try using the Plusnet supplied router to see if that somehow made any difference and it did not.

I do use VPNs frequently for work, and sometimes a 4G access point for other purposes. I have a fairly complex setup of local physical and virtual machines and connect to systems around the world - hence the need for a static IP. The wrong one that I've been put on is in the BT/Plusnet range but in the 51.x.x.x netblock.

Re: Static IP gone missing after a few days

Fix

Plusnet opened a Jira a few hours ago - just checked the ticket. By chance, I reset my Plusnet password a few minutes ago, applied this to my VDSL config, rebooted, and I'm back online with the right password. Coincidence or not, I'm happy and can now carry on with my work.
