Speeds slowing by the day

Hi
Ticket ID #69207154
Since being with PN my speeds have continued on a downward spiral day on day. This was probably due to my continual make/break connections. Last Saturday I completely rewired my setup so I now have the Technicolor router next to the LJU Master Socket using the RJ11 that came in the box. Router and wiring is all rock solid with no movement likely. Connection to the PC is via Powerlines but that side of the connection will probably not be important.
PN have been monitoring my line for the last few days and it did look like it was beginning to settle down even though my speeds were continuing to fall daily. I had a confirmation reply yesterday that it looks like it has final stabilised only to find this morning that I had another disconnection only a few hours after the reply (sods law). This has again resulted in another downward trend.
Here is my recent history:
These reading are all taken circa 05:00 when contention should not be an issue:

Sure, an SNR reset should fix that. I've submitted one now so you should see some improvement soon.

Re: Speeds slowing by the day

Funny thing now is that teh BT Wholesale checker is reporting:
5.79 Download
0.36 Upload
Ping 46.13
Now if BT is correct and I can keep these speeds I'll shut up Smiley

Re: Speeds slowing by the day

Hi again Kremmen,
I think there was an issue with the SNR reset I submitted earlier. I've submitted another one to specifically bring the SNR back to 3db.
If you can still see an issue after that I'd just advise raising a fault: http://faults.plus.net
Keep us posted.

Re: Speeds slowing by the day

Thanks
I'll give it time to settle down this time
I did have a fault on the go but because I had almost 48 hours without a dropout it was closed. Then within a couple of hours of that it dropped out again. (typical)

Re: Speeds slowing by the day

Still monitoring, and I will for a few more days before raising another fault, but back down to 4.5Mbps this morning.
Why can't BT just accept that there are often daily make/break connections and stop dropping my speed from 5.5 / 6Mbps to 4.5Mbps overnight and then continually reduce them on the above posted downward spiral?
The fact that I can go up to 48hrs with a continual connection and then I get a series of them daily - why ? How can this random fault be diagnosed and fixed ?

Re: Speeds slowing by the day

I know this is outside of PN's control as it's BT's equipment that is letting me doen. but my speeds still dropping daily.
I've now maintained a constant connection for "Uptime: 2 days, 9:00:12" which is a record for me.
However:  (the days where it does increase is immediately after PN have performed some form of Profile or SNR reset).

May 18 21:42:25 SNTP Unable to contact server: 212.159.6.10
These don't appear to have caused a downtime event.
So - will BT's 21CN equipment start to pick up on a constant connection and start to raise speeds for a change ?

Re: Speeds slowing by the day

I don't believe that an SNR Reset had any chance whatsoever of resolving this, nor is it necessarily BT's "equipment" it looks more like a problem with your line, so the answer to your last question is, in the short term - no!
The list of speed changes above will not have been PN performing a "Profile" or "SNR" reset. No ISP can or would do that. Nor will just looking at the download speeds from speedtesters be of any help to see exactly what's going on.
Taking a quick look at the DSL stats compared to those you posted previously, not only should your line be performing much better - you should be achieving sync speeds around 8Mbps or a bit higher, but your attenuation is a bit lower and the CRC errors are definitely lower. This is IMHO symptomatic of a bad connection somewhere.
Have you been monitoring your SNRM and sync speed as suggested here
Just monitoring at least when you have the computer on will be of some help!
As for the 3 entries from the modem/router log - the 1st and the 3rd are nothing more than the modem/router being unable to contact the servers probably whilst the connection was down during a resync. The 2nd entry seems to be a Dutch IP address trying to access a blocked port - probably trying to ping you - nothing too uncommon about that.  Have you got the Plusnet Firewall set to low? This will prevent such things getting to your modem/router on the ports listed and will not affect your normal usage.

Re: Speeds slowing by the day

Hi
I have the PN router firewall set to standard. Thanks for the info on that event log warning.
I also think I have a line fault. Whenever I look at the uptime and perform the backwards calculation as to when it last went down it's always at a time when I'm not on the PC and more often in the dead of night when there is no activity of any kind.
Thanks for taking me back to your previous advice. I'm going to set that off ASAP.
I'll report back.

Re: Speeds slowing by the day

Noise/Interference is generally worse after dark and if you have connection problems that's when the noise levels are more likely to cause such drops.
You can attach any saved RSL graphs of interest to a post (flat line sync speed graphs with no drops or change of speed are of no interest). Posting the DSL stats from the modem/router in conjunction with the graphs will generally give the right kind of information. Sometimes the RSL log file is of interest - you can copy and paste relevant sections to a post or attach the file.  To add an attachment to a post, if you didn't use the Reply button, when you've typed the message, click on Preview, then below the box you'll see the + Additional Options and Attachments..., click on the plus then Browse to where you saved the .jpg or txt file.

Noise margin quite consistent @ 7.1db - 7.3db
Connection speed a very consistent 6103 / 440
So, do I have a line fault that needs further investigation ?
