Speed problem - Gel

My normal speed of 2,400 has dropped to 1,376 this afternoon; noticed I lost connection earlier.
Have tried a manual disconnect/reconnect but still same.
Was wondering if it's because of heavy www use today; I'm around 2 1/2 miles from Exchange.

Re: Low speeds and line noise

If you are two miles from the exchange the line must go all round the town before it reaches you - have you tried the test socket - your attenuation is very high as is your noise margin

Re: Speed problem - Gel

Hmm
Huh
My Netgear DG834G V5 plugged into dedicated ADSL socket which in turn wired directly to BT
Socket ie doesn't share phone cabling within house.
Never had this happen before, so will keep monitoring.
Possibly something at Exchange I guess, but Exchange Checker shows all OK...apparently

Hi Gel,
I don't suppose you know what your noise margin is normally like?
Yours looks really high.

Re: Speed problem - Gel

Sorry James can't recall; if I do, I'll post back but fairly certain lower than 60!
Is there anything you can do to check my profile?

Re: Speed problem - Gel

Hi Gel - There's nothing obvious other than the high SNR.
I've just tried resetting this (as I'm not seeing any errors on your connection).
Let us know if you see any improvement in the next hour or so.

Re: Speed problem - Gel

Indeed you have the magic touch.
Shut router down for 10 minutes, opened up my other laptop, and now see best d/load speed ever,
despite that high SNR.
There is no noise on the phone line incidentally; is crystal clear.

Though speed checker still sees as:

Download  Speed
1504 Kbps

0 Kbps 2000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1504 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3488 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1750 Kbps

Hopefully I may now be in learning period, and will see my profile at exchange lifted up

Re: Speed problem - Gel

Hi Gel,
You just had to wait for the BT profile to lift. That has now, so you should see it up to 2500k now.

Re: Speed problem - Gel

Jojo tonight it's dropped from 2500 to 2000
ie
Estimated line speed:
1.0Mb (Accurate to within +/- 1Mbit) - Checked on 2009-01-12 20:58:11
Current line speed
:
2000
Will it be staying there.?
Would reducing my SNR have any effect seeing data below, and when do +Net implement;?Huh
here's my Router data:

Re: Speed problem - Gel

Your attenuation has gone up by 1 I notice.
I know you said it was a dedicated adsl port but have you actualy tried the test socket, I assume by 2.5 k/m from exchange you mean pysicaly as oppsed to your line length im supprised with an attenuation that high you can even get the speeds you have.
Aslo your WAN uptime is only 43 minutes, have you been reconnecting or turning your router off? this can cause your ip profile to drop as BT see this as a stability issue and try to compensate by lowering your profile speed (annoying eh?)

Re: Speed problem - Gel

Hi Gel,
Looks like you've had quite a few disconnections which have caused your profile to drop. Have a look here for hwo to troubleshoot a dropping connection.

Re: Speed problem - Gel

Thanks Jojo; speed has improved now, and was having some drops in connection prior to speed falling to under 3kpbs.
(As your graph shows :(()
Current router stats are:

System Up Time 10:18:06
Port  Status  TxPkts  RxPkts  Collisions  Tx B/s  Rx B/s  Up Time
WAN  PPPoA  1907  1955  0  670  1958  00:12:11
LAN  100M/Full  15745  18286  0  259  148  10:17:49
WLAN 54M 104316 87323 0 2291 570 10:18:06

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3136 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation  62.0 db        31.5 db
Noise Margin                8.0 db          17 db
As others have commented considering distance I am from exchange I'm surprised sometimes at speed
I enjoy.
Recall in dial up days BT did turn up the "gain" as I recall to enhance dial up speed, and that
may still be on line.

a few disconnections too.
See my Plus Net profile has changed from 2.5 to 2.0; can we try & rest to
the previous figure of 2500 please?Huh
