Speed of course ! - Download speed.

I up graded my very old modem router (origo Asr-8400) to a Linksys Ag241 about two/three months ago.
For a while my connection was (ever so slightly) quicker, but more importantly it was still stable. (IE PN Speed test I ran retuned the same results for the new modem router as the old)
Download 1199kps and upload 372 kps. (there were some minor changes day to day, but you get the notion?)
Lately the speed test has been very eratic, download upto 2296kps, and down to 1016kps. Upload speed has not varied much.

When you say you know it's a noisy line, how do you know, what are you basing your remark on?

Re: Speed of course ! - Download speed.

OK, I've done some digging and read your other post (was on holiday when you posted so missed it). So you have an XTE2005 faceplate, no extension sockets or wiring and you don't use the landline? but do you have a corded phone? I note no-one suggested you borrow one and have a listen for noise on the line.
As you are on a long line, noise will have a major impact. Have you had any sync drops lately?

Re: Speed of course ! - Download speed.

yes sill have the faceplate, and it has a (cheap) phone plugged in, with an incoming call about once a month for with a sales pitch for some thing or other, never make any outgoing calls on it.
No extensions. (master socket to the one phone above, and to modem)
Not sure if I have dropped my sync rate... Embarrassed  but looking at my modem settings
(This is how I have interpretted what I can see) It dose not stay connected to the internet all the time.  IF it has not activity for period X it looks like it disconnects. I have an option to tell it to ' re-dial' but the lowest time I can put in is 20 seconds, the highest is 80 seconds, after that I have an option to ticket a box where it connects on demand..
is this disconection a drop in sync ?   Huh  my only thought on this - I did not notice my download speed on the PN checker varying so much when I first installed the modem.

Re: Speed of course ! - Download speed.

When you listen to your line it should be absolutely quiet apart from a gentle very quiet shhhhh which is barely perceptable. If there is any crackling or other inetrmittent noises then you have a line problem. Who do you pay line rental to and what package are you on?
As far as trying to get the best sync from your line, either noise/errors or too many on/off's in a short time interval look as though your Target SNRM has been pushed up, you will be bestter leaving your router on 24/7 once it's synced at a better speed.
How long had the router been on when you posted the stats in the 1st post? When do you normally switch on & off.

Re: Speed of course ! - Download speed.

Thanks for the pointers.
I listened to the the phone line, and it has a shhh..which if you had not pointed out I would not have heard.
I dont turn my modem router off. Below is a copy and paste from the router page, that I tried to describe
PPPoA Settings
      User Name:
      Password:
Connect on Demand: Max Idle Time  Min.
    Keep Alive: Redial Period  Sec.
This keep alive is where I enter the 20 seconds option.  The lowest number I am aloud to input.
This is todays PN speed test.  I did have two tabs open when I did this., unlike normal where I have the one.  (this page was the second tab)
