Speed and Interleaving

Hi,
My broadband speed over the last few months seems to have been getting worse, and is very intermittent especially when gaming.
I have ran a few tests, both with your tester, and also BT's. Here are the results:
BT:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2173 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2944 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2500 Kbps
YOURS:

Oh by the way, my router stats are:
Type Interleave
Status No Defect Available
Downstream Upstream
Data Rate(Kbps)
2912 448
Noise margin (dB)
9.3 17.0
Output power (dBm)
17.6 12.3
Attenuation (dB)
57.0 31.5
And it is also showing that interleaving is turned on?

Nothing has changed, using the same router into the same socket, using the same filters etc. Is there anything that can be done?
Of course I started a ticket, but I just got the usual response..."In order for us to look further into this please visit http://faults.plus.net", done this but now the BT speed checker doesn't work?
As said previously, is there anything that can be done, and also could interleaving be turned of please? By the way, i pay £20 p/m for 2mb!!!

Craig Richards

Re: Speed and Interleaving

Craig - Those results really do look practically what I would expect for your length of telephone line.
The noise margin could be slightly better, but not much.  I don't think removing interleaving will make much difference for your speed.

Re: Speed and Interleaving

Hi James,
Thanks for getting back to me. I removed the ring wire from my socket, and the router stats are now as follows:
Data Rate(Kbps)
        3072                  448
Noise margin (dB)
        8.0                  17.0
Output power (dBm)
        18.1                  12.3

Attenuation (dB)
        57.0                  31.5
Would turning interleaving help with gaming? I always seem to get lag on the PS3 (Hard Wired by the way)?
Thanks,
Craig

Re: Speed and Interleaving

Hi again James,
Sorry, meant to mention this but forgot. Most of the trouble I have is in the early/evening/night, through until around midnight, then things tend to get better. For instance now, browsing seems to be very very slow, with pages hanging now and again?

Re: Speed and Interleaving

Yep - That's a slight improvement.
Does your router give you any indication of any errors?  That would help with working out whether or not interleaving would help at all.
What sort of speedtest results do you get when the connection is feeling a bit on the slow side?

Hi again James,
Router shows no errors, well for what I can find anyway?
Did some test's last night and got the following, even though the browsing was hit and miss for most of the night.

Even though the speed doesn't look all that bad, the actual connection on an evening is terrible, and online game play is just as bad, had to turn the PS3 of last night due to lag being that bad.
As you can see from the test's above, my connection is never steady? I would have thought it would be?
Thanks,
Craig

Re: Speed and Interleaving

Hi Craig,
Those tests are actually fairly steady for a contended broadband service.
It might be an idea to try configuring your rWin & MTU settings where possible - may make a difference.

Would moving to a business product be a better Idea, considering I work from home anyway?

Re: Speed and Interleaving

Hmmm... according to a quick google search, OSX Leopard sets RWIN automatically. I'd be surprised if later versions don't do the same thing though not sure which version you have.

With regard to the account query, the account type doesn't have any effect on the line speed - that's all between your premises and the exchange so if that's why you were thinking of changing you won't see any difference.
I'll have a look for something RWIN/MTU-like on the mac and post back if I have any luck.

Re: Speed and Interleaving

Hi,
I have managed to calculate & also change the MTU for OS X to 1478, so set this for both OS X and the router, plus the PS3. Ran a couple of speed test's and no different, but will check again tonight.
Thanks,
Craig
