Speed and CRC issues

Hi there.
As far as I remember my connection were fine when I swap from rubbish O2Broadband to PlusNet. Now every month I have issues with speed ping etc.
First of all unfortunatelly 1 day before xmas my both routers Zoom X6 (after flashing done exactly as ZoomTelephonics engineer guide) and Netgear DG834Gv4 (restarting itself continuosly) died leaving me without internet connection.
It's good that my friend had spare BT Home Hub 2.0 so I have internet through xmas days. Now I checked all data on router and I'm bit disappointed of the readings:
DSL line status
Connection information
Line state Connected
Connection time 0 days, 13:28:07
Downstream 14,130 Kbps
Upstream 448 Kbps
ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.5
Latency type Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up) 15.6 dB / 26.3 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 7.0 dB / 4.0 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 21.1 dBm / 11.8 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local) 0
Loss of Signal (Local) 0
Loss of Power (Local) 0
FEC Errors (Down/Up) 278 / 113
CRC Errors (Down/Up) 0 / 2147480000
HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 10879
Error Seconds (Local) 0
As my Line attenuation (Down/Up) 7.0 dB / 4.0 dB is very good (I have maybe 100m to exchange point) my broadband should be very fast
On 15/08/2010 my line was synced with proper speed as you can see on the picture and from that time it never returned to normal (mostly Upload sync dropped and now Download sync as well - for long time it was sync with speeds above 17000).

Other thing is CRC Up errors amout is very high - what can cause this (still have little problem to understand all this technical stuff about ADSL Tongue ).
Interleaving - I ordered long time ago to switch it off but for some reason it's on again and my pings on game server rised about 10-12ms.
Before I start another ticket maybe there is some1 that can explain me why these CRC errors are so high and what causing low speed on very short copper line (maybe I should rise ticket with BT about faulty line?).
For now I stuck with this BT Home Hub 2.0 router but not for long my new one is on the way so this maybe will relieve me from technical problems with equipment (it's LINKSYS WAG320N).
Thanks for help in advance Smiley

Re: Speed and CRC issues

The likely cause is data errors on the line, seen by the exchange DSLAM.
Its reaction, over time, will have been to resync with higher Noise margin values, in an effort to overcome the errors.
This has probably failed to solve the problem, so the reaction will then have been to "band" your line. The DSLAM forces your line to sync within limits that are lower than the theoretical maximums, according to which band it has decided, in an effort to get a stable line again. These bands are:
160Kbps - 288Kbps
288Kbps - 576Kbps
576Kbps - 1152Kbps
1152Kbps - 2272Kbps
1472Kbps - 3072Kbps
2272Kbps - 4544Kbps
3328Kbps - 6656Kbps
4864Kbps - 9728Kbps
7168Kbps - 14336Kbps
Your figures suggest you have been placed in the top band, and you are currently syncing near the top end.
And somewhere in the process, the DSLAM has put you back on an interleaved setting, also with the aim of improving stability.
The solution probably comes in 3 stages:
1. Get the source of the line errors fixed.
2. Get the banding removed.
3. Get the interleaving removed.
The line errors could still exist, could be intermittent, or could have existed sometime in the past (and have gone). They may have been caused by your faulty router
You probably want to monitor the line statistics over a period of time to determine which case you have.
A tool like RouterStats can help there, but I don't think it works with the BT Home Hub. Not sure what else to suggest other than manually checking, and comparing the sync speed, noise margin, and error stats

Re: Speed and CRC issues

Hi sebastianpolomka,
considering you had over 19000 sync before I don't think it's just the noise margin keeping the sync down. The line is definitely not banded so at this point I would suggest two possibilities. Plug directly into the test socket or get a new router. I noticed a difference of 3500k off my sync betwen two different routers I tried so that can make all the difference.

Re: Speed and CRC issues

I already connect this router to service/test socket. There is only one phone on this line. I tried to move modem cable as far as I can from electric lines.
Now sittin and waitin for new router so then after couple days we will see what's changed.
BT Home Hub 2.0 isn't the best router I had but it's keepin me online Smiley
And todays router dump :
Connection time 2 days, 23:58:21
Downstream 14,130 Kbps
Upstream 448 Kbps
Noise margin (Down/Up) 15.3 dB / 26.2 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 7.0 dB / 4.0 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 21.1 dBm / 11.8 dBm
FEC Errors (Down/Up) 3601 / 672
CRC Errors (Down/Up) 0 / 2147480000
HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 11051
Error Seconds (Local) 0
FEC and HEC errors rise a bit but probably it's normal

Re: Speed and CRC issues

Ok new router is here connected and setup, but unfortunately not showing any useful info about FEC or CRC errors Sad
--- System Information ---
Vendor: Linksys
ModelName: WAG320N
Firmware Version: 1.00.12 , 2010-03-22T10:51:43
Boot Version: 1.06
Hardware Version: 0.01
--- DSL Information ---
DSL Driver Version:  AnnexA version - A2pB023k.d21d
DSL VPI/VCI:        0/38
DSL Status:          Showtime
DSL Mode:            ADSL2+
DSL Channel:
DSL Upstream Rate:  448 Kbps
DSL Downstream Rate: 15323 Kbps
                      Down        up
DSL Noise Margin:    14.3 dB      29.2 dB
DSL Attenuation:      8.0 dB      3.5 dB
DSL Transmit Power:  20.3 dBm    11.8 dBm
It synced bit faster than BT Home Hub 2.0 - 15323 instead of 14130kbps
Line attenuation changed a bit as well but now only I can wait for DSLAM to re-check my connection (I've hope that nothing is banded yet)

Re: Speed and CRC issues

Hi sebastianpolomka,
Ok, I would try a different filter, different RJ11 cable and if still no joy then see here for any other checks where you can then raise a fault if you've done all those tests. After that I'm all out of ideas.

Re: Speed and CRC issues

Hi Jo.
It was first thing I replaced when connect new router - replace cable and filter (still connected to test socket).
I run bttest and oops surprise

Upstream can't be checked due to line technical issue ??. Should I start to worry or it's only hickup in BT test system?.

Re: Speed and CRC issues

Hi sebastianpolomka,
If you've tried all that then I would raise a fault. Seems your profile may have been lowered due to all the disconnecting. That'll go back up again though.

Re: Speed and CRC issues

Ehh unfortunately I need to wait with this till next year.
After running some functional tests on my new router I found that it can't work properly with
my NAS drive when 1Gb is enabled (missing JumboFrames) and that was the whole
idea to buy expensive 1Gb enabled router. So I'll return that one and get new one that is capable of running
1Gb with JumboFrames. Anyway I'll still watch my connection sync speed and other errors.
Till then I need to be patient (btw Linksys WAG320N isn't best solution for 1Gb ethernet).

Re: Speed and CRC issues

The upstream test thing seems to be their end. I can't do it either, same error.

Re: Speed and CRC issues

After month of testing :
I'll stay with this router - good ADSL modem (some problems with restarting itself but for now I'm not bothered).
And today i noticed faster sync speed :

Looks good so I think patience is re-payed. Only upload speed is bit annoying but I think I must live with that Sad

Re: Speed and CRC issues

HI sebastianpolomka,
I can have the upload uncapped if you like?

Re: Speed and CRC issues

Jo it will be brilliant if you can Smiley
Now I think connection is stable enough to give it a try if not well BT system will lower it down anyway
to get most stable connection.
BTW I checked line speed and this info about my line speed seems bit weird to me :
Telephone number:
016XXXXXXXX
Phone exchange:
COLESHILL
Estimated line speed:
7Mb (Accurate to within +/- 1Mbit) - Checked on 2010-12-02 23:52:06
Current line speed:
16 Mb
What this estimated line speed means? (or maybe it's for normal ADSL?)

Re: Speed and CRC issues

Hi sebastianpolomka,
The line speed will be for ADSL1 I imagine. I will place an order to have your upload uncapped, this normally takes 24 hours to complete.

Re: Speed and CRC issues

Heh I see all my efforts and PN technical team seems to be useless. Probably there is something with my old copper line.
Yesterday I was playing online game and got disconnected. After reconnect that's what router stats show me :
--- DSL Information ---
DSL Driver Version:  AnnexA version - A2pB023k.d21d
DSL VPI/VCI:         0/38
DSL Status:          Showtime
DSL Mode:            ADSL2+
DSL Channel:
DSL Upstream Rate:   446 Kbps
DSL Downstream Rate: 15323 Kbps
                     Down         up
DSL Noise Margin:    14.2 dB      26.4 dB
DSL Attenuation:      8.0 dB       3.6 dB
DSL Transmit Power:  20.3 dBm     12.2 dBm
So again I'm back to 15k and dunno how to make BT to fix this problem (it all starts when stoopid amateur BT engineer messed up with my line on begining
and probably they will not take any responsibility for that at all - because my line is fully working).
Anyway thank you Jo for carrying my case Smiley

14/02/2011 Update
Well as I can see something is really messed up Sad  .
My sync goin down time after time so probably copper line is faulty but I'm not pro with this so have only hope that this will pass or will be fixed soon when I change my
provider  Sad
