Speed Problems

Hey,
Well it's kinda not just the speed. Downloads are fine from most sites.  It when I'm online playing games, its not all the time but seems like a lot of the time I get a lot of LAG and frequent disconnects.  It's not just one particular game its all of them.  Browsing can also be slow at times.  It also feels that if someone else in the house is surfing the net, it slows both of us down.  I've had the router for awhile and I know it's not that as I've used it round other people's house and on other broadband services.  I'm open to suggestions, I'm not saying its a fault exactly but it's defiantly not right.
Many thanks in advance,
Mark

Re: Speed Problems

Hi,
can you run a test at http://speedtester.bt.com/
also what does your profile say here https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed
and finally what does a speed test at http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ give you?
Are you using wireless for gaming? That can cause a lot of issues especially under Windows.

Re: Speed Problems

I notice you're using the default Netgear wireless SSID, have you changed the default password/security settings? If not someone might be pinching your bandwidth, causing the slowdowns.

Re: Speed Problems

Oh ok, I'm on option 2, but looking into changing to Unlimited.
I think I'm plugged into the master socket but I'm going to double check tonight.
Yes the SSID is the default but I have WPA Encryption on it.
I need to have the console and pc's wireless because there are so many computers in the house, and I have no phone socket where my gaming area is, but downloads speeds and browsing are fairly reliable its just gaming, by the way its not just on my PC its on my PS3 and my Wii.

Re: Speed Problems

I'd try switching interleaving off as your line looks pretty good, that would help your latency and pings.
However you will still have some extra latency through gaming using your wireless connection I'm afraid.

Re: Speed Problems

Do you use any P2P programs (including things like BBC iPlayer or 4oD)? If so do you totally shut them down on all PCs and laptops while you are gaming? Even of you are not downloading files yourself you may be uploading to other users and I would expect that to affect gaming.

Re: Speed Problems

I don't use any P2P programs, only usenet sometimes but I do that early hours of the morning when no one is online and I'm not gaming.
