This isn't a complaint but I wonder if anybody can explain these results on the plusnet speedtest. The first three results are from one computer running XP with a 54Mb wireless connection and the next three from a computer running Vista with a 54Mb wireless connection.

Silly question. Were you playing music on the Vista machine when doing the speed test?

Are you fully patched with Vista as it did have some network performance issues on its initial release.
I assume if you do the test on the XP machine again it gives the original speeds?

Sorry, the timeline is reversed on the table.
Can't explain the reason for the difference, as I said I would expect vista to be slower

Just to show its not time related I've done a switch back and forth.

As I say not a complaint as either speed is pretty good but how does it happen. Both wireless adaptors have 54Mb and excellent signals and both machines are side by side.

I too misinterpreted which were the "first three" initially, taking position in the list rather than time. Having resolved that I have a possible explanation, the Receive Window (RWIN).
Vista dynamically optimises this on the fly based on the actual datagram throughput. Essentially XP doesn't, and if the default value for the connection is being used it will be much too small.
On the XP computer I suggest you first run a tweaktest at DSLreports. For the results use DSL, 6000, WinXP and normal.
The tweak results make recommendation for improving throughput. However, if you want guidance from us please post the URL you will be given in small letters near the bottom of the results page. For tweaking RWIN (and possibly MTU) you will need to download DrTCP (choose the ".exe" file, it's only 52.5kB).

I would also recommend not using the speed test on the portal and trying to use http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk instead.
