Re: Sony Bravia iPlayer - incorrectly traffic shaped?

I thought Youtube was classed as streaming (0x80)and I don't think any package rate limits that

Hi Jim,
It is restricted from 6-10pm on value and extra, but only to 2meg. See here for all product traffic shaping.

I actually just recent;y got a Sony Bravia, but I haven't tried none of the funky stuff with it yet. Is it only on certain models?

I see JoJo beat me to it I replied off page 1
Youtube will max your line out for about 10 seconds just to get ahead of itself then throttle back to about 1.8Mbps except for HD which streams at about 4Mbps I think.
What I don't understand is why PN throttle at what they call a peak time when my ISP switches to off-peak at 6pm  Undecided

HI Lorenzo48, yes, I did beat you... for once Wink
I can only imagine off-peak from six would indicate some sort of leaning to the business user. Just a guess!

Re: Sony Bravia iPlayer - incorrectly traffic shaped?

I dissagree - not for the first time  Grin  Kiss
Off-Peak from 6pm leans to the residential customer like BT does with it's phone calls.
Most people generally get home around 5:30 6 ish on normal day shifts + kids home from school etc.
At this point PN start throttling it's customers and it appears more and more that those customers are not aware of this............partly their fault for not reading the small print or finding their way to the traffic management part of the website which takes about 4 carefully chosen clicks.
This is why I oppose the silly "broadband campaign" of the gadget show. They should be targetting what can be fixed, not limitations of the technology. People need to be told up front and in your face about traffic shaping - but they aren't. PN sell it as a benefit but it is only a benefit to PN enabling more customers in a smaller space.

Re: Sony Bravia iPlayer - incorrectly traffic shaped?

A slight misunderstanding
If the customer base for an ISP is mainly business users then off peak for that ISP would be after normal business hours.
If the customer base for an ISP is mainly home users then peak usage for that ISP would be expected to be when users return home from work - i.e. after 6.00 pm
Hence Jojo's comment was intended to refer to the customer base and where the ISP is seeing it's peak usage

Re: Sony Bravia iPlayer - incorrectly traffic shaped?

Ah I see, good point Jim.
In that case the best course of action is to seak a business based ISP if you are residential and a residential ISP if you are a small business.
Doesn't make sense does it?
EDIT: In fact on that logic should PN not be making offers and pushing for more business users to utilise their spare capacity in the daytime, and turn that spare capacity into profit rather than keep the offfers coming for residential customers?

My package is the legacy BB Your Way Option 2 (IIRC)
No sign of any fix for this. Can anyone from plusnet let me know what the status of this is?
