Some sites take over a minute to appear, yet work instantly via a proxy?

Is there some weird filtering/cache-lookup/blocking occurring?

I'm trying to access www.hungryhorse.co.uk.

Tried a few times over a few days, and it takes about 1 minute to appear, which is obviously not acceptable. Once it appears subsequent accesses are instant. It's almost as if there's a "is it in our cache? wait 1 min while I check. No it isn't grab it now".
This has occurred every time over the past few days (I was interesting in looking it up I'm heading to one of their locations for a meal next week and I want to check out the menu in advance)
Seen this with other websites too....

Works straight away via a web proxy so it's something at Plusnet's end.
Anyone know what's going on?!

If you're on chrome, try ctrl+shift+i then click the Network tab and try to load it again. You should see exactly what is failing to load and/or causing the delays.
FYI, it loads fine here.

Re: Some sites take over a minute to appear, yet work instantly via a proxy?

Yes, I'm on Chrome..
Ah that's interesting next time it's slow I'll do that and post the results.
It was driving me mad the other day! Still definitely a Plusnet thing if the HideMyAss proxied version loads instantly but the direct Plusnet one takes a minute... I've had broadband since 2002 (BT -> Bulldog -> O2 -> Sky)  and never seen this laggy 1-minute delay thing before, but it's happened a few times since I joined Plusnet last week.
Cheers!

http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episodes/roj70m/invisible-walls-everything-and-the-kitchen-sink
Here's the next one, albeit slightly different in that it barfs out straight away.

I get an "This webpage has a redirect loop" error when viewing it in Chrome.
I get an "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage" when viewing it in IE9.

It works instantly via HideMyAss.

That http://www.hungryhorse.co.uk/ page is a bit strange !
Using Firefox on Ubuntu and doing cached DNS lookups via my home DNS server, the hungryhorse homepage takes 20 seconds to load.
But then opening the link again (and again) in new browser tabs, each new hungryhorse homepage takes 20 seconds to load, despite the DNS being cached, and the images etc already being in Firefox's cache.
However unlike the OP, I find ANY subsequent link clicks within the site take 16 seconds to load (rather than being instant).
Traceroute looks OK

Re: Some sites take over a minute to appear, yet work instantly via a proxy?

I've just tried www.hungryhorse.co.uk on my mobile via 3G and it's instant too (well as instant as mobile networks can be - took the usual 2 or 3 seconds). Ditto the gametrailers link - that loads up fine as well.
Hmm...
Something's definitely amiss somewhere.

Haven't had these issues with my other broadband ISPs and slightly beginning to regret moving and getting Fibre Unlimited if a good chunk of  the net is going to be slow/blocked 😉

It does for me now as well, as I've accessed it once today (Plusnet's cache has it so it's now fast for everyone? Dunno!)
How does the gametrailers link work at your end?

your link reports an loop as you say, it's slow to load the home page but it looks a very flash heavy pages
plusnet don't run a proxy that caches pages.

Re: Some sites take over a minute to appear, yet work instantly via a proxy?

Good to hear that Plusnet don't cache pages (some ISPs did back in the day).
As I said, I'm new here but quite a power user and heavy downloader (had my first net connection in 1992 dialing up to a guy in Kent who had a few Sun Sparc workstations, so know my way around the net, but not in an uber-techy way!)
Hmm, maybe Gametrailers has a dodgy section, as the proxy is failing now as well...

Something odd with the hungry horse website.
