I receive spam to mail aliases under my account that do not exist
You may recieve spam to an e-mail alias that does not exist, but spam is still received by your default mailbox. An example of this could be:
Your e-mail aliases:
john@doe.plus.com
jane@doe.plus.com
E-mail received is addressed to:
doesntexist@doe.plus.com
If you have received an e-mail similar to this situation, then you may have the "Catch-all" feature enabled in your PlusNet mail settings.
How to turn off catch-all
**WARNING** - Some people make use of the catch-all feature so that they do not need to give out their correct e-mail address. If you make use of this feature, then please read the How to create mail forwarders/redirects section of this post for more information.
How to create mail forwarders/redirects
If you rely on the catch-all feature as mentioned previously, then you can still use this feature in a much more spam-resistant way.

Another reason for this is if the X-Envelope-To: header is different to the To: address.
In the above example, your mail client would show the email as being sent to notdeliveredhere@privacy.net when infact it would have gone to the deliveredhereinstead@privacy.net mailbox.
Quote X-Daemon-Classification: SPAM
Envelope-to: deliveredhereinstead@privacy.net

In the above example, your mail client would show the email as being sent to notdeliveredhere@privacy.net when infact it would have gone to the deliveredhereinstead@privacy.net mailbox.

I seem to remember discussion some time ago (~ 9-10 months?) along the lines of phasing out of 'default' or 'catch-all' mailboxes in order to help protect the platform against SPAM.
Is this not taking place? I know I still have the option, but its an exisitng account.

This advice is only really applicable to older accounts prior to turning catch-all off the default, initial setting.
There wasn't really a clear-cut guide to checking for this, so I wrote this
