Slow upload speed

Merry Christmas everyone.
I've been with Plusnet over a month now and I guess my connection speed has stabilised.
Using the BT Speedtester I get the following result:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 4058 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :6176 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 5000 Kbps
I am actually happy with download speed achieved but my problem is the upload speed. Whenever I do a speed test, e.g. speedtest.net or broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk the upload speed is shown as 0.05Mbps or 57Kbps or something of that level. Is that normal? It feels very slow and causes problems when video calling, for example, plus uploading pics/vids is a bit ... painful.
Is there anything I can do to improve that?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Slow upload speed

The BT speedtest should have tested the speed up and down but you have only shown the down speeds... what did it say for up?

Re: Slow upload speed

I think upload tests are done only for 21CN/ADSL2+ connections, and this appears to be 20CN/maxADSL.
The upstream sync speed (448kbps) is correct but the measured speed should be 350-380kbps, so your result is very poor.
What stats does your router give? Copy/paste data from this page if you have a Thomson TG585 supplied by Plusnet.

Re: Slow upload speed

Nothing obvious to me there which might explain such low upload speeds, in particular large values of CRC or HEC errors. Error seconds is high (226) which is 1½% of up time, but that wouldn't explain such a large slowdown. For reference my value is 23 after 144 days up time.
Plusnet's own speedtester is at http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/. Downstream speed is low for me at the moment, but upload is around 350kbps.
Getting 0.00 kB for Data Sent is normal on this router, nothing to worry about.

Re: Slow upload speed

Try disabling your antivirus/firewall and try the test again

Re: Slow upload speed

Just seen a post elsewhere that reminded me of something - is your connection to the router wired or wireless? If it's wireless upgrading the router's firmware to 585v8 version 8.2.7.8 firmware (Plusnet branded) might help.
See Community Library Article for instructions.

Re: Slow upload speed

No firewall/antivirus to disable. I'm using MacOS. (Unless there's a firewall built-in?).
I'll try upgrading the router software. Currently on Product Name: TG585 v8    Software Release: 8.2.7.7
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Slow upload speed

from the V8 thread, PN have to do the upgrade from their end on Macs
Quote from: Joanne
HI all,
The updated firmware is now on the community library (585v8 version 8.2.7.8 firmware/ updated wi-fi drivers) I'd be interested to hear if this solves any Windows OS issues as we know it was successful for mac, so please let me know. There is currently no facility to download this on mac OS but Bob has left a suggestion in a comment at the bottom of that page. Alternatively if you have a Windows OS device you could use that to do it.

ps we will still upgrade mac users remotely if requested

Re: Slow upload speed

Hi steveuk75,
The firmware upgrade has fixed an issue with slow upload but it wasn't as slow as yours. It still probably the first thing worth trying though. If you don't have a windows machine you can use to upgrade then let me know and I can get it upgraded remotely for you.

Re: Slow upload speed

Yes, please, if you could do it remotely that would be great. No access to a windows machine until early Jan.
Thanks 🙂

Re: Slow upload speed

HI steveuk75,
I didn't do anything. Is your firmware version 8.2.7.8?

Re: Slow upload speed

Well, you're so good you just have to think about it and it happens (or it could be the support case I raised 🐵 ).
Yes, the release is 8.2.7.8. Upload speed is right now 107Kbps which is double what I was getting previously. I hope it remains at least at that level. What is a realistic speed I should expect?
Thanks,
Steve
