Slow speeds in evening

Hi guys
For the past week i've noticed speeds in the evenings are only about 20-30Mb but if i do a speedtest first thing in the morning its back up to 70Mb  Sad
I'm guessing its over utilisation at the exchange/cab?
I'm reluctant to log a fault as last time i did Openreach broke the line for a week!
I've got some TBB ping graphs
Last Thursday 18th

Yesterday 25th

Has anyone else noticed the same sort of thing in the evenings with plusnet? I can't get above 2.5MB/sec downloads but normally are 7.5MB/sec
Exchange is St Neots EMSTNEO - Both TBB graphs were with barely any internet usage (facebook browsing)
I've had a few PPPoE disconnects but not sure if they're related
Thanks Smiley

Re: Slow speeds in evening

Can you do a speedtest and post the results here: http://www.speedtest.btwholesale.com/
Make sure you let us know what your BT speed profile is set to on there.  We'll check ours is set right.

Sad
I know things will generally be slower on peak times on a contended DSL line but this is a bit excessive...

Re: Slow speeds in evening

I can't see how to log this on the user portal - it only seems to be for connection drops which it doesn't
From the TBB ping graphs it looks like things speed up about 11pm, will try again then

Re: Slow speeds in evening

I'm getting 7.1MB/sec on usenet downloads...???
Are you sure theres not some traffic management going on for http? speedtests and normal downloads are still showing about 15Mb / 1.6MB
Thanks

Re: Slow speeds in evening

Are you saying that at peak time you are seeing faster USENET than http?

Re: Slow speeds in evening

it seems that way - usenet was min of 5MB/sec while http/ftp and port 81 and 8080 downloads were very slow - the ping graphs look like theres some congestion somewhere

Re: Slow speeds in evening

A thought
Could you try the TBB speed test in the evening
The interesting part is whether there is any difference between the normal test and the http x 6 test

Re: Slow speeds in evening

The drop out was me testing PPPoE directly on laptop
I'll try the TBB test later on and report back
Thanks

Re: Slow speeds in evening

Yeah, that looks grim.  I presume you had some nntp downloads going for that whole packet loss period?

Re: Slow speeds in evening

Ok, so in summary
- During the days your speeds are fine.
- At peak you see http speed tests drop
- At peak Usenet is unaffected
- If you run a multithreaded speed test the speeds are fine.
- You are seeing a lift on the ping graphs and packet loss.
What I think is happening here is that the packet loss is causing your drop in http speeds at peak.   The reason that usenet and the multithread tests don't show it is because the extra threads running are covering up for the packet loss.    On a single threaded speed test, the packet loss will be causing the speeds to drop and TCP naturally throttles back.
I think you've got a fault that needs looking at!  Have you raised one yet?
edit: my god, I really should proof read my posts better..
