Slow download speed almost no upload speed pings of 14154.881 ms

My broadband appears to have slowed massively over the last few weeks, I was getting 12 Mb/s - 16 Mb/s over copper, now I get 3.5 Mb/s on speedtest if I am lucky, but also get 408 request time-outs just trying to load www.plus.net or community.plus.net.
I logged a fault with Plusnet on Wednesday morning but haven't heard anything other than 'we're testing your line this may take 24 hours'
My SNR was 5 but tonight it's 3
I'm about half a mile from my local exchange as the crow flies.
When my line last slowed down, Openreach looked at the line for a while, said there was no error on it, but popped in at the local exchange on the way to the next job, shortly thereafter my line was back to 12-16 Mb/s
Any ideas ? tonights stats below

Re: Slow download speed almost no upload speed pings of 14154.881 ms

From those stats (attenuation figures as reported) something has gone really wrong with the line unless the router is reporting wrong
If you dial 17070 option 2 is there any noise such as crackles/whistles etc.

Re: Slow download speed almost no upload speed pings of 14154.881 ms

Hi,
Many thanks for looking at my stats.
My dect phone seems very quiet, and clear on quiet line test,  but will try 17070 with a corded phone if I can find one.
The last time BTOR visited they installed a service specific plate, i.e. microfilter built in, I wonder if these fail as normal microfilters seem to do, I may try with a normal microfilter in test socket again, and leave it for a few days.
Stats today:

Re: Slow download speed almost no upload speed pings of 14154.881 ms

If you try in the test socket and report the stats again this will at least show if it is a filter failure

Doesn't look too much different ?
Download speedtest has improved from 3.4 Mb/s to around 4.3 Mb/s so some improvement.
Ping community.plus.net  looks better tonight:
64 bytes from 212.159.8.110: icmp_seq=7 ttl=249 time=39.947 ms
64 bytes from 212.159.8.110: icmp_seq=8 ttl=249 time=39.736 ms
64 bytes from 212.159.8.110: icmp_seq=9 ttl=249 time=37.687 ms
64 bytes from 212.159.8.110: icmp_seq=10 ttl=249 time=38.584 ms
64 bytes from 212.159.8.110: icmp_seq=11 ttl=249 time=42.564 ms
i.e. under 50 ms ass opposed to something like 14150 ms last night.
I'm going to leave it a few days and see if things improve and if not try another microfilter (just to be sure), and if that doesn't improve things, try another of my spare routers for a further 3 days.

Re: Slow download speed almost no upload speed pings of 14154.881 ms

Might be worth seeing if Plusnet will give you a DLM reset, as it'll take ages for your stats to recover.

Re: Slow download speed almost no upload speed pings of 14154.881 ms

I would suggest raising a fault anyway as something is really adrift
However I would try a spare router as it isn't going to get any better
Note about a reset - that won't help as something is crippling the upstream speed and causing the reported attenuation to be far too high

Thanks for raising a fault with us. Leave that with us and we'll get your line looked at. Only add further comments if absolutely necessary.
In the meantime, if you could try an alternative router if you haven't already?

Re: Slow download speed almost no upload speed pings of 14154.881 ms

Hi Chris,
Thanks for responding to this. I've now tried my third router a Thomson 585 which I put online last Friday, stats below. I also changed micro filter, and router/modem to socket cable just to be sure. I haven't restarted the router since Friday so not sure why Uptime is reporting as it does, unless that's just uptime since logging into the router.

This is with router plugged directly into the TEST socket so in effect I have tried 3 routers, 2 micro filters, 1 built in filter in BT plate (when not in TEST socket), and 2 adsl modem cables.
Speedtest is looking a little better today Ping:57ms  Download speed: 7.78 Mb/s Upload speed: 0.75 Mb/s
Download speed on Friday was 3.5 Mb/s Up: 0.7 Mb/s
I'm not sure where to go from here, do the SNR values, attenuation look ok, do I just need to wait it out a while longer or  is it perhaps time to have another look at question 87630710 and have OpenReach have a look at the line ?
Many thanks for the attention.

Thanks for doing everything we've asked for so far Smiley
The Ticket is back with our Faults Team, they'll complete further testing on your line as soon as they can. The likelihood is that an engineer may need to visit, so it may be worth noting down your availability for a visit. Engineers are generally available, Monday - Friday and operate two time slots which are are 8am-1pm and 1pm-6pm.

Re: Slow download speed almost no upload speed pings of 14154.881 ms

Now on day 10 of the "training period" and speed has been as high as 8Mb/s down, but having just checked, I'm stuck around 2.45Mb/s down again today.
Also noticed that I haven't been using the Internet apparently at all from the View my Broadband usage page since last Sunday.
0 KB for Allowance used, Overnight usage, and total for everything since Sunday is this related as Monday 7th, and Tuesday 8th also have 0 KB usage.
I don't appear to have used the Internet at all. That's a bit strange as I've been using it every day, and my wife has been on Farmville, CandyCrush, wordsHD, Facebook etc.etc. pretty much every day.
Latest line stats are:
Uptime: 1 day, 7:44:43
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,156 / 16,495
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 219.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 0.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 10.0 / 22.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.0 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / IFTN
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): NA / 829,429
CRC Errors (Up/Down): NA / 65
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 60
3 different routers, 2 different adsl cables, 2 different micro filters, plugged in to the test socket
Where do I go from here ?
