Slow broadband

I recently joined plusnet 900. It was giving me 600 - 650 on the speed tests. Today it is only giving me 120 - 140. That is a lot lower than the guaranteed minimum of 500.

Re: Slow broadband

@hslamaker Is this on a wired or wireless connection? How long have you had the service?

Re: Slow broadband

I've had it a few weeks so far. This is wifi. I was getting a good wifi speed until today so I wondered if there is a problem.

Re: Slow broadband

Try with an Ethernet connection. Full Fibre either works, or it doesn't, but Wi-Fi is your problem, not the ISP's.

Re: Slow broadband

I don't have anything connected to it that is wired so cannot check that. What would be reasons for wifi to suddenly drop that much? Is it something that I can fix easily?

Re: Slow broadband

Fix

Is it possible to connect anything via Ethernet? Another question (sorry) - are you connected to the 2.4 or 5Ghz band - your current speeds suggest the 2.4 band.

Re: Slow broadband

5GH as per set up. I haven't changed anything. Anything can be connected, yes, but you need a cable! Which I lack. As I said, I was getting good wifi speeds, then suddenly really rubbish speeds.

Re: Slow broadband

It appears that a common point of confusion for many individuals is the distinction between Wi-Fi speeds and broadband speeds, a observation I've frequently encountered in various discussions over time.
As of April 24th2026, I am now utilizing Sky Broadband, which offers full support for IPv6 addressing. Broadband Status page https://stats.uptimerobot.com/i06TwWNbhx

Re: Slow broadband

Cables are cheap enough, and an essential for checking issues such as this.

I'm rather bemused by this, and it is not really in my skill-set, so if you don't mind, I'll tag a couple of people with more experience and see if they can help.

@Dan_the_Van , @MisterW ?

Not particularly helpful, @DJMcKenzie87

Re: Slow broadband

I think we have at least established it is the WiFi rather than the broadband itself. I googled it and it suggested interference from nearby items such as speakers etc. I do have my alexa next to it so I will move that.

Re: Slow broadband

Yes. It is now showing 653 on the speed test. I think I place the alexa too close when I was cleaning earlier. Might be useful info for others! Thanks for responding to help.
