Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Hello
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3894226830
Since late last night / early this morning I have been unable to get a downstream speed quicker than 1.2mb/s.
Usual behaviour is between 5-6mb/s depending on the time of day.
When I do a speed test the needle flat lines and does not deviate like I find it normally would, which made me wonder if it is being throttled.
Any ideas?
Cheers
Dan

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Hey
I have a ticket open ref #94317991
1. Can't get hold of router stats as at work but assure you they look fine, line is 200 metres long, direct to exchange.
2. I logged a BT speedtest using the wholesale tester on Saturday, was the similar/same speed as the one I posted above, on clicking further diagnostics the tester errors.
3. Estimated line speed: There's no speed estimate currently held on your account. Current line speed: 6.5 Mb.
4. I don't think I can check from the master socket anymore, last year when I was having problems a bt engineer changed the socket so it looked like he was doing something. It made no difference to the noise on the line as isn't much.
From late Saturday night and on Sunday night when I was trying to use the connection it was disconnecting every 5 mins. Speed was still 1.2mb/s.

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Looking at the IP profle on your line, this did drop down to 1.2 on the 8th, but increased back to 6.5 this morning at around 10am. So I'd suggest logging in to the router and trying a single disconnect/reconnect before we go any further down a fault investigation.

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Hey Chris
Thanks for getting back to me.
Speed was better last night (still not normal) and ping was horrible.

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Hi Dan,
Sorry if you've mentioned it, but are these tests wired or wireless?

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Both, with little difference between them.
I added further info onto my ticket, but can post here as well if it help.
Any way of investigating what made the profile poo its pants on Saturday?
Here is a print of my router stats from last night as I did not provide one yesterday:

UpstreamDownstream
Current Rate (Kbps)4487520
Max Rate (Kbps)12687520
SNR Margin (dB)2715.5
Line Attenuation (dB)3.58.2
Errors (Pkts)00

I have had an ongoing issue with speed in the past - last year I think. It took btwholesale a few months to sort and I think it only did because plusnet staff didn't give up pursuing the issue. - I don't want to go back to those dark days Smiley

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

This afternoon when I got home from work it was 6mb/s with a nice ping.
Speed is flirting between 3-5mb/s tonight, ping is horrible.

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Even though the speed was lower it shouldn't impact the pings that heavily. When this happens again can you try running the following from a command prompt:
ping -t bbc.co.uk

Leave this going for a couple of minutes, it'll show any deviation in ping and if packet loss is happening.

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Will do, thanks for replying.
Your support staff replied to my ticket today :
VP xxxxx AMBER
CLT Pass
NIC Pass
Summary
Potential contention issue.
Am I right in thinking that a contention issue would effect ping like I am experiencing?

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

I was hoping that would be the next thing looked at! I was going to pull the exchange reports myself if not.
Yes, if there is a capacity issue at the exchange this can cause packet loss, slower than expected speeds and increased pings. They are generally resolved quite quickly once identified.

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Hey Chris
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I haven't really used the net properly until tonight.
Speed it ok, but ping is poop, its making gaming pretty erratic. I got some stats for you as requested.
Ping statistics for 212.58.244.18:
Packets: Sent = 162, Received = 162, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 22ms, Maximum = 318ms, Average = 93ms

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

Don't suppose anyone is about who can check the profile on my line?
A request to move me onto a near empty NCIF was with bt and was due to happen today I believe, my wife also got a bt maintence page mid morning.
Since then speed is capped to 1.5mb. Ping seems on a whole new level though... which would suggest the move happend.

Re: Slow Speed since last night / this morning

It looks like after the move had completed your BT Profile was set to 2mbps.
I've contacted them and they've just increased it to the right amount.
Give it a couple of hours and the speeds should increase.
