Slow Download and Slow Upload.... AGAIN!!!

Hi there,
I originally posted here:
http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,93926.0.html
about my slow upload speed and followng the advice of JoJo, updated the firmware on the router and noticed a bit of an improvement.  However over the past 2 weeks I've noticed again that the speed down & up has reduced again. Despite many tests at various days / times using speedtest.bt.com or speedtest.net I consistently get a slow speed, must less that I should be getting.
Can you help shed any light on things and improve my low speed?

Have tested using Android phone / new Win7 PC / Win 7 laptop / Win XP laptop all with similar results so I don't think its related to PC things.
thanks in advance,
Barry Cry

Re: Slow Download and Slow Upload.... AGAIN!!!

On that URL i get this information:

Estimated line speed:
Not recorded (service activated before we introduced estimates).
Current line speed:
    5 Mb
Is that what you meant?

Re: Slow Download and Slow Upload.... AGAIN!!!

yes, you might have to wait until tomorrow for a staff person, but you should be showing a lot faster than you speedtest is showing
Try the PN speed test  http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

Re: Slow Download and Slow Upload.... AGAIN!!!

speedtester.bt.com shows:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2605 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :6208 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 5000 Kbps
Jim: - during this thread so far my test results have been on Wireless with various devices ranging from 1m from router to 1 floor above router. My original thread (in my OP) was all wired testing.  Will be able to do a wired test tmrw, although I fear the same results.
I notice there are loads and loads of errors showing in the stats from my router.  That can't be right.  Is that related?
thanks

Re: Slow Download and Slow Upload.... AGAIN!!!

Having loads of errors could indeed be the cause as it can severely impact the effective speeds

Re: Slow Download and Slow Upload.... AGAIN!!!

Hi JoJo,
In previous threads on here I've seen numerous times that Plusnet recommends leaving the router switched on 24/7 (which I do).  However in a bid to try something to improve my slow connection, I restarted the router.  It had an immeadiate improvement yesterday which is still better today:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 4389 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :6784 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 5000 Kbps

So on the face of it, simply restarting my router "solved" my issues.  However, I'm still worried by the amount of errors shown in my router details (above) and also, do my router statistics look sensible to you (below) now?

Re: Slow Download and Slow Upload.... AGAIN!!!

For almost 25 hours uptime, those errors are insignificant. Your SNR margin at 12dB is high - you're on Fastpath and with downstream attenuation of 28.5dB you should be able to get pretty close to 8128 downstream synch on a 6dB SNR.
The staff on here will probably pick this up later - they should be able to get the SNR reset to 6dB which should improve your downstream rate.

Re: Slow Download and Slow Upload.... AGAIN!!!

Hi Jaggies,
My original Router stats were:
Uptime:  8 days, 0:31:20
DSL Type:  G.992.1 annex A
Channel mode:  Fast
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:  1,152 / 6,208
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:  448 / 6,208
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/GB]:  0.00 / 2.56
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:  12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:  14.5 / 28.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:  28.0 / 14.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote):  TMMB / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):  0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):  4 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote):  0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote):  0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote):  65,592 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down):  9 / 0
CRC Errors (Up/Down):  24 / 6,985
HEC Errors (Up/Down):  0 / NA

Which showed uptime of 8 days and 65,592 "error seconds" which seemed like an awful lot really.
Hope the staff can help as you say.
thanks
