I would like to be able to use Skype and i player properly but my speed is not good enough. My DSL rate is 1248 why is my download speed not nearer 1000 or 1100 ,rather than 848 should my profile be higher ?? Should I turn interleaveing off?? Should I ask that my profile be raised ?? or discuss with my ISP as its ays below ?? Thanks
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Download Speed
856 Kbps
0 Kbps 1000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 856 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 200-1000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :1248 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1000 Kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

Broadband signals on copper wires attenuate with distance leading to much reduced connection speed on long lines. Your connection speed implies you live perhaps 5km (road distance) from the exchange.
The transmission protocols used to send the information from the Internet to your computer have to ensure the data received is correct and these integrity checks use up a significant proportion of the bandwidth (around 13%). For a connection speed of 1248kbps that leads to a maximum useful data speed of 1085kbps (1248 x 0.87). BT round this down to 1000kbps when setting your IP Profile (idealised throughput - useful data - speed).
Next it is necessary for your computer to manage the connection with the data source and confirm all data has been received (nothing missing) - any data packets missed or damaged beyond repair have to be retransmitted. This unfortunately means additional overhead and consequently the actual throughput (useful data) speed will be less than the ideal value. Sadly the actual speed measured by the BT test (856knps) is about right for the IP profile you have.

Why do you believe interleaving is on? From your stats I would say it's off as FEC errors are 0.

Surely the key problem is the 63.5 db of downstream attenuation?
