Re: Sinking profile/ speed

Hi Lucerne,
You would need to maintain those sync speeds for about 3 days for a profile change to be made at BTs end.

Raised ticket today
2 Ticket no. 2791370
On the last few (over 3) days I have been syncing in the high 5000s and with SNR over 9 (sometimes over 10) but have only seen speeds in the
3700s. Can you look in to my connection to see if the SNR might be reduced and my profile adjusted, as the speeds I now see are well below those achieved in the past. Thank you.
I hope what I put is what I should have.
No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

The target SNR for most MaxDSL lines in 6dB- this is intentional and MaxDSL is reliant on this in order to deliver the higher speeds.

I find that very interesting and something I've always wondered about is; is there a definitive way of ascertaining what your target SNR actually is.
I ask this because I have 2 routers, a Netgear DG834 and a BT Voyager 210 and something's puzzling me. When I plug in the Netgear, it always starts up with a noise margin of around 9dB but when I plug in the Voyager, it always starts up with a noise margin of around 6dB. I would have thought that both routers should start up with more or less identical noise margin.
Regards .....

Thanks James-
last PN speed test 4716/381 with SNR 9.2. Still scratching sandbox atop my shoulders what made it go down from 5500 on 15/8  to 4000

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

Sorry to turn to this again
Immediately after James advised me that the profile had been reset speeds were over 4500 but soon moderated to 4200. However last night and this morning they were very erratic and dropped well below 4000with lows below 3000. Is there any significance, or could the cause be within my computer?

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

You've had a resync event @ 4544Kbps hence your being moved back onto the 4000Kbps profile.
I'm trying to find out your current sync speed but the BT site is being a little slow.

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

You're currently syncing at 5856Kbps.  That should give you a profile of 5000Kbps if you maintain those speeds for the next 3 days.

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

Does still seem funny that it leapt up then down so quickly. The 2754 reading worried me as it seemed so our of character. So variations as per my list are normal then?

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

Yup.  Broadband is a contended resource, so at times when your exchange is busy, you should expect to see the occasional slow speed.
Some unlucky people connected to the Sheffield Cutler exchange (ie: me) see peak speeds considerably different to off peak.  It just depends on the exchange that you are connected to.

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

Well It’s happened again, only worse. Last time my speed and profile dipped, it recovered quite well, but then BT decided to increase the SNR to 15. Actually it fluctuated 12/15. This morning ( at 5:40 ). I got from the BT tester my lowest synch rate ever 3776/448, a profile reduced to 1500 and actual speed 1323.
I am completely puzzled, as apart from examining the sockets and finding out that the previous occupant's bell wire had been removed and replacing socket http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php?topic=1572.msg14911#msg14911
all remains the same. Test results and line stats are attached

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

Rather than saying that BT changed the SNR again, I'd be more inclined to think that there's a wider problem.  I've done an uber-show-us-everything test on your line, which shows the following.
Line Rate: The line rate has varied by a considerable amount and very often on almost all days during the analysis period. The line rate is within acceptable limits. Please see the average value.
SNR: The noise margin has varied by a considerable amount but occasionally on just a few days during the analysis period. This is normal behaviour for a DSL product and is not affecting the service in any way.The Noise margin is within acceptable limits. Please see the average value.
This could well be expected behaviour for the length of your line to your exchange.  The fluctuations are most likely down to your margin variations, potentially causes by some poor quality on the line.  I don't think it's related to the bell wire.

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

Hi James  Smiley So it appears there is nowt I can do Sad
Some time before the SNR was much less than 15+ and I never noticed much of a problem with my connection. Would it be possible and worthwhile to request a reduction?
You write "see averages". May be it's one of my Specsaver moments , but no can see. Did you perhaps mean 'calculate and see'? BTW what length of line do you make it? You also wrote ' a wider problem'---wider than the things you mentioned after?
OT to this, I am mulling over upgrade (see my thread in Community to which you have responded). Might the change and intro of a router make the connection more stable to a worthwhile degree?
If I seem a real dumbo, I am so forgive Embarrassed

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

Hi Lucerne,
Sorry - I didn't copy and paste the averages!
It is possible that you may just have to deal with the fluctuations that you are seeing, although it is possibly down to your modem.  I'd always recommend an upgrade to a router, because then you're less likely to have software problems and they're generally a lot more stable that a USB Modem, especially as you don't have to reconnect every time that you start up your computer.

Re: Sinking profile/ speed

If you are going to get a router I would suggest one that supports Default Noise Margin modification such as the Speedtouch with earlier firmware - the Speedtouch 585 is one of the best for this.
That will allow you to drop your default noise margin by up to 5dB
