Should the Plusnet Profile and the BT Profile always agree?

Just curious if Plusnet get sent BT's actual profile or use something else to decide theirs.
I've had differing profiles a few times. Of course it's only ever a small amount but why should they ever be different?
I'm not including catch up periods.
Like now my last drop ended up with a stated BT profile of 7.9. Plusnet has caught up but their profile is stated as 7.8.
As said only a small amount but why?

Re: Should the Plusnet Profile and the BT Profile always agree?

If the actual IP profile is 7.88, the BT speedtester says its 7.9. Plusnet will round down to 7.8 to ensure you never get data faster than your line can handle.

The BT speedtester appears to be capable of displaying the IP profile with 2 decimal places.

So your explanation for this? Your point being?

Re: Should the Plusnet Profile and the BT Profile always agree?

At one point Plusnet did say that changes in the DSL connection rate less than 256k wouldn't result in a profile update. Perhaps that only applied to increases, not decreases. Anyway, that was a long time ago and the system has probably been changed since then.
I think a more likely explanation is that Plusnet did not (yet) receive an update with the 7.9 profile, or if they did, they didn't process it. Traditionally the updates take a few days to arrive, so your DSL connection rate could have changed again before a profile update for the previous speed has reached Plusnet.

The previous profile was 8.0 up for 50 days with a matching Plusnet profile. I had a line drop and the BT profile changed to 7.9 and Plusnet changed after a while to 7.8.
So the question still remains.

Re: Should the Plusnet Profile and the BT Profile always agree?

If the BT Profile is 7.90, 7.8 is the correct Plusnet profile.

Re: Should the Plusnet Profile and the BT Profile always agree?

Since when? I thought if the BT Profile is 7.90 to 7.99 inclusive, the Plusnet profile should be 7.9. I've always had the BT profile equalling the Plusnet profile, except when the Plusnet profile hasn't been updated.
billnotben - can you post your DSL stats please? And perhaps a screenshot from the BT speedtester further diagnostics?

No, it just rounds down to the nearest 100kbps below. So for example:
Line is sync'd at 3720kbps (ADSL2+)
BTW profile should be calculated as 3281kbps and this is passed on to Plusnet
Plusnet set the speed profile on the account at 3200kbps (which you can see in the member centre) and on the network at 3200kbps.

8952 x 88.2% = 7896. Round down to multiple of 100 = 7800.
Plusnet profile of 7.8 is correct.

Re: Should the Plusnet Profile and the BT Profile always agree?

On the 88.2% I can see it's a gnats kneecap short but then what is the point of the BT profile if Plusnet make up their own?
I can also understand that from a business point of view it makes sense to operate under a harsher criteria to save bandwidth where possible.
Maybe a name change is in order.

Because to difference allows the Plusnet QoS to work.

Plusnet profile of 7.8 is correct.

And so on the BT speed tester 7.896 is rounded up on the two decimal places, making it 7.9 (dropping the trailing zero).
Seems everything is in order.
That's RPM to you!!

Re: Should the Plusnet Profile and the BT Profile always agree?

The point of the BT one is that they won't accept data faster than can be delivered down your line. If data is received faster than that they randomly drop packets without taking any account of the type of traffic.
Plusnet set theirs just below BT's to make sure that they can control the traffic to drop. If you are streaming, using VoIP or gaming and start a download the download will be restricted first so that the experience with the higher priority traffic is not affected.
Quite frankly I really cannot understand why you are making such an enormous fuss over a 1.2% difference! There's no way you could tell the difference in practice.
