The router is an Archer VR400

@markyl1975

Which hardware revision is it ?,  V1, V2, or V3

In the VR400's web configuration, navigate to -

        Advanced > System Tools > Firmware Upgrade

        then click on [Check for Upgrades]

and ensure you're using the latest firmware.

While you're in there, navigate to -

        Advanced > NAT Forwarding > NAT Boost

        UNtick the NAT Boost [Enable] tick box.

        then click on [Save]

In a web browser on a computer connected by ethernet (not WiFi)

go to this website - https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat

click on [Start Test]

... let the test run ... it takes up to two minutes ...

when the results appear, scroll down to "Share Your Results:"

click on the blue [Copy] button

then come back here and <paste> the results URL in to your forum reply.

Re: Short dropouts on fibre

@outcast

For what it is worth, when I used a VR400 I found NAT boost beneficial to performance over QOS.

My understanding is the VR400 uses software for QOS which would put extra load on the CPU where NAT boost uses hardware

Re: Short dropouts on fibre

@Dan_the_Van

The CPU load from software QoS on a 74Mb connection will be insignificant.

On my old Celeron J3455 CPU'ed router, under maximum QoS load on 80/20, was a CPU load of about 8%.

My router does QoS on both upload and download, the VR400 only does upload so QoS only needs to cope with 20Mbps max.

I just want @markyl1975 to eliminate bufferbloat as the cause for the apparent internet stalls.

If bufferbloat isn't the problem, then sure put the NAT Boost back on, although it is unlikely to be of any help under 300Mbps.

Re: Short dropouts on fibre

@outcast My results - over Wi-Fi admittedly - are perfectly acceptable to me - I don't do gaming.

Re: Short dropouts on fibre

@outcast

What you say maybe the case, all I am saying I didn't really notice any benefits using QOS when I tried it, my connection at the time was 78 Mbps / 18 Mbps

Not that I've used the VR400 for many years as a router I did set NAT Boost OFF as that gave me access to the 'Traffic Monitor' found under >Advanced >System Tools as it's access is denied by having NAT boost enabled.

Re: Short dropouts on fibre

Before flying off in tangents all over the place it may be helpful if @markyl1975 confirmed whether they are on Full Fibre or not and if they have a Plusnet hub that could be used for diagnostic purposes.

Re: Short dropouts on fibre

@jab1 I suspect that @outcast has completely bamboozled @markyl1975 with technical info, who freely admits .... " I have zero interest in computers and the like."

@markyl1975  Are the dropouts occurring on wired ethernet connections as this kind of problem is unusual on a Full Fibre service or is it only on Wi-Fi connected devices?

@RealAleMadrid I was trying to drop a gentle hint, as I  noted the OPs comment, but...

I'm sure that even if  @markyl1975  doesn't have an interest in computers, could have followed step by step instructions.

Never mind, I'll unsubscribe from this topic now, and you can sort it out between yourselves.
