Speedtest.net is showing

Please help, have tried using the on-line diagnostics, but don't really help if I'm honest. This has been happening on and off for a couple of months and its getting ridiculous.
Thanks
Ryan

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

Hi ryan,
Have you noticed the connection dropping at all? That could be causing the intermittent slow speed. I'll look at your account for you first thing and see if I can see anything awry, in the mean time would you be able to post your line stats from the router please?

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

Same here too.
To be honest, webpages are fine. But having installed windows 7 and reloaded F-Secure 2010 AV onto the system, 5 hours later and it's still installing updates at about 3kbps. Line speed according to broadband checkers remains about 3MB alledgely.
I phoned up and was promised a call back from technical support. Needless to say they didn't have the courtesy to do so, nor for customer services to bother contacting me to let me know that they were unable to do so (if that was the case).
Is it the internet itself? Well I haven't seen any other correspondence to suggest that the whole system is falling apart which rather suggests the problem is at Plusnet's end. Seriously I tried to download all of the normal internet tools (MSN, google chrome, thunderbird and AV updates) and all have been coming down at <10kpbs rates despite the overall speed being vaguely reasonable.
If there's no improvement by the end of the week I'm going. PlusNet get £30 per month from me (£15 from BB (and I can't even get my antivirus up to date!) and the rest from line rental and calls). I know I can get this cheaper elsewhere but mistakenly thought I was paying for quality.
If you've not already guessed, I'm seriously disappointed - and that's as a long term (>6 years) customer. In a word - Pathetic.

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

I agree.  Speeds have been very poor for perhaps a couple of weeks.
Not only do I want it no slower than it was ......... I want it much faster.
If things do not improve soon I will be off to the competition.  Cry Angry Sad Shocked Huh

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

@ryan1983uk
It does seem from checking the logs that there are a number of very short connections from the start of the month, it looks like those might have caused your line profile to drop as the connections are going on longer now. Is your router plugged into the master socket without an extension cable?
I can see you've raised us a fault ticket, that should get picked up today for you. I'll check it later on and see if I can get you an update.

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

Ryan,
Just to add to what Matt's said - something looks very wrong with those line stats.
If you can use your test socket, it would be a good start to diagnosing the problem.

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

Thanks
Just to let you know, at present this isnt in a master socket as this is situated in the kitchen and didnt really fancy having my PC in their, so my external extensions runs round the side of the house into a room upstairs. Now for the first 4 months or so my connection was excellent as stated (getting 5-6mb steady) but its only been the last couple of months where it has really gone belly up. What I will try tonight aswell is plugging the router in the master socket and using my laptop to do a speed test from there. Also, I have 4 phones in the house, is there a chance these could cause interference at all?
Your help is appreciated.

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

Thanks Ryan.
Are all of your phones filtered?  Can you initially try unplugging all of them, rebooting your router, and see if you notice an improvement in your line stats?
If it's a wireless router, is there any chance you could plug into the master socket and connect via wireless?  We really need to see what things are like from the master socket, even if it is just for a brief test.

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

Hi James
Many thanks for your reply, I will nip home on my lunch and test this for you and let you know what results I get and will post here, router stats, ping requests and speed test net, and will do it with all phones unplugged too. The main phone is filtered, the other 3 are just used wireless and just powered.
Thanks

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

Right - Wireless phones can cause interference, so it would be good to test with them unplugged and turned off.
If you can leave your router in the master socket this afternoon, we can run checks from here too.

Re: Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

I'm with irritablegit on this, I expect speeds to get better not do the reverse !
I also have experienced poor line speed over the past month or so. I was getting 1.5meg download without any problems, now it looks like BT have capped the line to 576k ! Now I have seen something about retraining the line to get the speed back up? Is this true?
Raised a fault ticket yesterday after the support team wasted my time. Not happy with plusnet at the moment, I have experienced more issues than any other provider so far.

Re:Seriously, Speeds are so slow!

Hi Warrengm,
I'm sorry to hear that you have also been having problems with your line speed.  As you've mentioned it appears that BT have capped your line speed.
As we mentioned in your fault ticket, we've raised this as a fault with BT and we should hopefully have a positive update for you soon.
