No, it's just one of the BT HomeHub's also providing BTOpenzone.

How does that work ?
Totally no knowledge of this.

If you own a BT Home Hub you become a wireless hot spot!  The hub sets up three SSIDs, your own encrypted one and two unencrypted called BTOpenZone and BTFon.  Although the other two networks are not encrypted you still need some sort of password to use them to access the internet.  I don't know if you then compete with the Home Hub owner for bandwidth usage or if their traffic is given absolute priority.  Next time you see that BT advert where they boast 3 million wireless hot spots, you'll understand how that can be.

That's hardly true.  The vast majority of BT customers don't know that they are sharing their home wifi and don't use the free access facility.

Re: Security of Powerline Adapters - encryption needed

How does the owner of any given HomeHub stand legally if another BTOpenZone user downloads illegal content via their open WiFi ?, as the copyright holder knows the IP address of the router, yet the content is being accessed using an SSID which is different from the owner's private SSID.
Presumably the householder could be prosecuted, as in the case of owners with unencrypted WiFi, as the owner of the equipment is responsible for ALL traffic which passes through it - legal or otherwise.

Actually the opposite could be the case as you could be said to have a cast iron excuse as you can't be accused of having an insecure wireless router

I was just quoting the BTOpenzone website.

I guess whoever was responsible for the BTFON system wasn't completely incompetent, and did consider that possibility.

Yeah but what does that actually mean ?

You can prove it wasn't you because the visitor's access to the Internet will be through a separate channel

Does that mean a BT HomeHub has more than one WAN IP address ?, or are they just saying it's on a different SSID ?

Effectively BT or Fon act as a proxy so all the BTFon, Openzone traffic will go through their servers.

You could use your own WiFi hotspot.  Grin
