SN Margin Change

I have had a stable connection for about the last 70 days with a SN Margin of about 6.5.
I have had a couple of overnight resyncs in the last 18 days. The sync speed dropped from 2368 to 2304 to 2080 all with a SN Margin about 6.5.
Having read many items on removing the bell wire, I thought I'd give it a go.
There was no interruption to my connection but I note that the SN Margin has shot up to 14.0! Nothing else has changed.
Has anyone else experienced such a change and could anyone explain why this has happened?

Re: SN Margin Change

How did you remove the bell wire without disrupting the connection
Assuming you did manage it a resync should give a significantly faster speed

Re: SN Margin Change

I just cut the wires from terminals 3 and 4 on the back of the master socket. They remain connected on the extension where my router is connected. Perhaps I need to cut them there as well?

Re: SN Margin Change

You mean that your internal wiring isn't attached to the removable front faceplate like it should be

Re: SN Margin Change

My master socket is over 26 years old - it's what BT provided at that time. I don't have the luxury of removable front plates, etc.

Re: SN Margin Change

It might be worth removing the ring wire from the other end as well as it can't hurt and may help

Re: SN Margin Change

Thanks Oldjim. I'll do that in the morning. TBH I was trying to avoid that as the extension socket is not too easy to get at. But anything is worth a try, I guess.  Smiley

Re: SN Margin Change

If the ring wires are a source of noise and you removed them without disconnecting the modem then the SNRM will increase. You need to resync the modem with the exchange so the SNRM target of 6dB is re-established and you speed will increase.

Re: SN Margin Change

Good News!!
I removed the bell wire & earth from the extension socket this morning and switched the router off for 30 minutes.
On restart the sync speed had gone from 2080 to 3744 and the SN Margin had gone from 14.0 to 6.0.
Its looking good - just a 3 day wait for DLM to catch up and then, hopefully,  I'll crack open the champagne!!  Grin

Re: SN Margin Change

Just reporting a successful conclusion.
This morning, my BT IP Profile has gone from 1750 to 3000. This has been mirrored by PN.
The result - my download speed has increased from 1500 to 2576.
Given my original estimate of 2.5Mbps, I think my Broadband problems are now sorted. Long may it last!!  Grin
