SMTP / PN Relay Server

Hi,
I use the relay.plus.net server to email out security logs from my router weekly for me to read through and check for anything dodgy without problem - Email arrives each week on-time.
I have just brought a printer home from work (as I work for Xerox) which has a scan to email function on it. I've configured it to use the relay.plus.net SMTP server to mail out, and I sent several test mails over the weekend from the device, but I didn't recieve any of them.
I have just tested the device by sending another scan this evening to a second email address as a CC.
The first email address which is an address in the same domain (@baby-green.co.uk) as the email address I use for mailing out the security logs is unable to recieve the scan even though the logs get mailed out fine, however my @xerox.com email address can recieve the scan.
Any ideas? Many Thanks.

Re: SMTP / PN Relay Server

A wild guess...
Have you got spam checking enabled and if so have you checked in the spam folder?

Re: SMTP / PN Relay Server

The email address used for delivering the scans is in the same domain (@baby-green.co.uk) so the mail is automatically accepted as it is trusted.

Re: SMTP / PN Relay Server

You could try sending the email directly from our relay server to see if it turns up. From a command line try the following (you'll need to type the bits in bold)...
Quote
C:\Documents and Settings\bpullen>
telnet relay.plus.net 25
Trying 212.159.11.46...
Connected to relay.plus.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 relay.plus.net ESMTP Exim Tue, 27 Nov 2007 09:05:13 +0000
helo moto
250 ptb-relay03.plus.net Hello moto [84.93.217.165]
mail from: <email_address_of_the_printer>
250 OK
rcpt to: <the_baby-green_email_address>
250 Accepted
data
354 Enter message, ending with "." on a line by itself
subject:this is a test
this is a test
.
250 OK id=1IwwPE-0007bX-H9
quit
221 ptb-relay03.plus.net closing connection
Connection closed by foreign host.

You'll need to press enter after each line (including the one with the dot on it) and make sure you enter the quit command at the end else the email will not be sent.
If the email is accepted but doesn't turn up then it's unlikely that the problem's with our relay server TBH. If the email isn't accepted then there could be a problem elsewhere.

Re: SMTP / PN Relay Server

Thanks.
I'm not at home at the moment, but I will remotely connect to my PC at home and test in a little while.

Re: SMTP / PN Relay Server

Ok, I just remoted to my PC at home, and here is the output from the telnet session:
220 relay.plus.net ESMTP Exim Tue, 27 Nov 2007 09:41:10 +0000
helo moto
250 pih-relay08.plus.net Hello moto [myipaddress]
mail from: ...@baby-green.co.uk
250 OK
rcpt to: ...@baby-green.co.uk
250 Accepted
data
354 Please start mail input.

Test Email
.
250 Mail queued for delivery.
The message has still not arrived in my inbox, however I have just had an idea.
Is it possible that my host is blocking the message because no account exists for xerox@baby-green.co.uk, the address I am using for the printer? As they are hosting it all, they can obviously see if xerox exists as a user in the domain?

Re: SMTP / PN Relay Server

Have you asked them?
Could you try changing your router to the same to see if it's logs then arrive?

Re: SMTP / PN Relay Server

Just tested my theory, by creating a new acconut in my domain and telent mailing the message to myself.
The mail arrived  Grin
This means, that there is nothing wrong at either end, it's just my host blocking the message because it knows the username xerox doesn't exist.
Thanks for all the help people.
