I am using a wired connection to plusnet with a Thompson router tg585 v8 software 8.2..7.7
I have checked the line for faults yet my d/load speed top rate is 60kbps..I notice the internet light often
goes off and sometimes goes red...I have reset the router several times,I have also switched it off for a few hours
and restarted..I have reformatted my hdd and reinstalled a pristine version of Ubuntu and Fedora but still get the same
symptoms..The router worked fine for the first 6 months but now is only fit for checking emails as system upgrades
are impossible...Anyone give me advice on what I should try next ?

Either you have a bad line or a bad router. If you can get hold of an alternative router try that, otherwise follow the procedure for speed faults.

I have installed a new filter and made a direct connection to the incoming signal box
A pine to Plusnet gives me 42.0...Might buy a cheapo router to see if that will cure it..
My current router is abt 6 months old but is constantly on (up until now)

Looks like the new filter has made a difference, you've now been connected for over 4 hours. Only issue is your line profile has dropped to 250kb/s due to the disconnections, which could also be the reason for the stable connection.
What sync speed is your router reporting at the moment?

In that case it's most likely the slower speed that's stabilised things, though the microfilter change may well have had a positive effect as well.
I was going to suggest raising a fault (please raise it as dropping connection rather than slow speed) but I can see you've already started the faults troubleshooter - please do answer all questions until the fault is submitted as otherwise it won't be raised through to our faults team.
