Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

Hi gang, looking for some advice please
About a year ago I switched from Pipex to Plusnet and, to resolve some issues I was having with disconnects, rewired my master socket with the XTE-2005 faceplate. (I'm on Broadband Your Way package if that's important)
This improved things for me no end and I went to a pretty stable stable connection of around 2.5mg (I had only ever managed 1 mg before).
I'm using a Netgear DG834GT Router. Plugged into the downstairs master socket (XTE 2005) and wirelessly connected to my PC upstairs to avoid reconnecting the internal extension wiring . My "usual stats" are:
Downstream
Connection Speed 2784 kbps
Line Attenuation 55.0 db
Noise Margin 11.6 db
This gives me a 2500kpbs line profile. Happy with that (well, not really but i'm on a long line so have to be..)
However, over the last few weeks I've noticed that my speeds have been dropping to sub 1mg and I've been getting some disconnects again - not many, but enough to be a pain. Doing some checks showed that my router sync was now around 1024 kbps and therefore my profile is downgraded to between 750kpbs and 1mg.
My router stats at these times show this type of profile:
Downstream
Connection Speed 1024
Line Attenuation 56.0 db
Noise Margin 16.3 db
So the real noticable change, other than the sync, is the the noise margin increase.
I've rebooted my router several times over the last few days. Each time the stats go back up to the "norm". However, at some point during the day or night (haven't been able to pinpoint this) my router obviously resyncs and drops my stats again. This means that, as I'm on MAX, my line profile with PlusNet is never upgraded.
I'm aware that different household equipment can effect things so I've done some tests today - running around switching things on an off. I have therefore checked my router stats with every possible piece of electrical equipment. (battery and phone chargers, TV and sky, using phone and mobiles, lights, fridge, washing maching, hoover, etc.. etc... even the central heating, boiler and power showers). To really test things out I've even put everything on at once and switched things on and off at random.
None of this had any effect on my line stats.
So what else could be the reason for my router resyncing at such bad speeds and high noise margin?
I'm at a loss what to do.
Please help! Quick thought - perhaps the Netgear router is not a good router for long lines?

Re: Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

As the Netgear logs are fairly useless I suggest trying Routerstats and leaving the computer running over night so that we can see what is happening to the noise margin and error rates. It looks as though your default noise margin has increased to 15dB presumably because of the errors on the line

Thanks.  That app is going to save me a lot of hassle constantly looking at my stats!!

Re: Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

Are you sure you lost sync.
It might just be Routerstats not getting a result

Re: Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

Done alot more checking and stuff today (much to the annotance of the family who have been ignored).  Seems like you could be right.  Todays losses aren't a sync problem (which would explain why when I'm reconnected the speed etc.. is the same - but a wireless problem.
Seems like I keep losing my wireless connection.  Which opens a whole new world of pain!  Mind you, I've obviously also got some sync issues or my speeds wouldnt keep dropping but the constant loss of wireless makes identifying the problems and monitoring harder.
I'm know even less about configuring wireless than about dsl so this will be fun!  Think I'll just reconnect my upstairs extension wiring and go from there.

Re: Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

Could try a different channel on your wireless, see if that solves that problem. I'd leave your wiring alone for a moment and see whether you have a line problem that needs sorting. What makes you think you keep dropping sync, are you checking that frequently? It may just be a very occassional event.
Re the RouterStats above, that doesn't look like loss of sync to me. The blank lines are when the router is being polled for a result but not getting one (router busy), not necessarily anything to do with wireless, but you'd be better running the machine with RouterStats on an ethernet connection whilst you are investigating.
Watch re-booting too frequently, no more than 5 in an hour, and to be quite frank if you been doing 2 or 3 a day for a couple of days, if you are getting an overnight drop as well you are in danger of convincing the exchange DLM to up your target SNRM to 15. It looks as though it may be 12 at the moment. You would appear to have a fairly noisey line at the moment.
Have a listen on your phone - have you recently heard / can you hear any crackling or other intermittent noises on the line?
Post a set of mid-dayish DSL stats from the router interface (similar to your initial post) only include the upstream figures as well. Also a set from mid evening.

Re: Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

OK, I'll keep monitoring.  I agree though, I think the "loss" I've been experiencing is more of a wireless/post to router issue.  Although I have def had one today.
Can't say I've ever noticed particularily bad voice line.  I'll make a point of listening from now on and recording any problems.
Strange thing though, been out all day with the family.  Left my comp on with routerstats running.  The log shows no problems all day.  As soon as i opening firefox and outlook my connection dropped to the router - although it was still synced.  Your idea of changing channel maybe be a good one.  Shame it's such a pain to bring the router upstairs to connect it on ethernet.
Stats at 08:00 today:

Re: Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

If it means moving the router, I wouldn't bother at the moment, it's not critical, and you may possibly end up with lower sync speeds.
Those stats seem fairly steady, it'll be interesting to see a late night set. Hopefully your line isn't noisey and that apparent Target SNRM of 12 dB resulted from your previous problems. Your Netgear should be fine with your line which isn't that long anyway (~4Km).
Set up RouterStats so that you can get a graphical representation of SNRM and Sync over a 24hr period or so. If you have any problems, Jim can probably sort you out on that one.
What phone have you got plugged in?

Re: Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

ok, other than a 10 minute drop (again, I think this was only a drop to the router and not loss of sync) my stats have been pretty steady over the evening.
Downstream
Connection Speed 2528 kbps
Line Attenuation 55.0 db
Noise Margin 12.5 db  (average from 23:00 to 02:00)
my phone is a Philips SE255 HDSound.  Triple dect handset.  Had it for 2-3 months.

Re: Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

Ah.
1) Don't want the average SNRM, want to know the exact extremes.
2) Problems start when you got your DECT phone by any chance? How far is the base unit from the router?

Re: Router Resyncing with poor sync speed

Ahhh was at the point of my "three or four days at good sync speed" and hoping to have my speed increased.
Get in from work and find my Syncg has dropped to 1056!!!!  Again......
Unfortunately my wife had turned off the PC so routerstats not on - can't tell when the problem happened.
Stats:
ADSL Link  Downstream  Upstream
Connection Speed 1056 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 16.0 db 17.0 db
I'm going to reboot my router... again ... and no doubt the stats will go back up to what they "should" be.
